AYANA Bali’s newly inaugurated cultural and events center, the SAKA Museum, has recently earned a spot on Time Magazine’s prestigious World’s Greatest Places list for 2024. By seamlessly merging Bali’s rich historical heritage with cutting-edge facilities, the SAKA Museum is becoming a pivotal hub for the island’s spiritual and cultural identity.
As an integral part of the AYANA Bali resort, the SAKA Museum emphasizes its commitment to celebrating and preserving Bali’s dynamic cultural heritage. The museum’s debut exhibition, ‘Walking Among the Giants,’ features a collection of ogoh-ogoh, the large effigies displayed during Bali’s New Year ‘Day of Silence’ celebration, Nyepi. This exhibition, a collaboration between Balinese communities and artists, vividly depicts notable figures from Balinese folklore and legends.

The SAKA Museum harmoniously combines Bali’s rich traditions with contemporary design, a balance reflected in its architectural elements. The renowned Napp Studio & Architects have skillfully incorporated elements of Bali’s natural beauty into the museum’s design. From the tranquil night sky mirrored in the light-studded ceiling and volcanic rocks represented in jasper and agate materials to water caves symbolized through various pools and fountains, the museum illustrates the profound connection between Balinese culture and the natural world.
“We are truly honored to see our collaboration with the Balinese community
acknowledged by such a renowned publication,” says Judith Bosnak, Director of
SAKA Museum. “With our captivating exhibitions, we hope to further elevate this
beautiful culture and captivate the global community.”

Alongside celebrating Balinese heritage, the museum was specifically designed to host a variety of events. The East Gallery on the ground floor offers a sophisticated ambiance for special events, accommodating up to 300 guests for weddings and corporate functions. The SAKA Garden on the upper floor provides a captivating outdoor venue with a floating stage, ideal for events hosting up to 400 attendees. Through its exhibitions, seminars, and events, the SAKA Museum strives to enhance the appreciation of Balinese history and culture.
In the near future, SAKA is excited to unveil new exhibits, including a display on Subak, the UNESCO-recognized water management system established in Bali’s rice fields in the 11th century and still in use today. Another upcoming feature will be an innovative light and sound dome installation, offering a modern take on Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence.

TIME Magazine’s recognition of SAKA Museum as one of the World’s Greatest Places is a notable endorsement of Balinese culture and traditions, and AYANA’s commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of the island’s living heritage. The museum’s name pays tribute to the Balinese Saka calendar, perfectly reflecting its mission to connect Bali’s past, present, and future.
The museum is now open to AYANA Bali hotel guests at no cost, and to the public for an admission fee.
