San Diego Airport showcases Cross-Border Art for San Diego-Tijuana Design Capital 2024

San Diego International Airport (SAN) proudly presents Espacios & Lines, an exciting temporary art exhibition that celebrates the rich culture of our binational region, home to 7.1 million people. This exhibition delves into the intersection of art and design, inspired by the joint recognition of San Diego and Tijuana as the World Design Capital 2024 (WDC) by the World Design Organization (WDO).

Espacios & Lines showcases the talents of 16 local artists, with half of them working across borders and five residing in Baja California. Among the featured artists are:

• Hugo Crosthwaite, winner of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, hailing from Baja California.
• Carla Sofía Ordonez, an artist and photographer, and co-founder of Tijuana’s Yerbabuena Gallery.
• Claudia Biezunski-Rodriguez, known as Sew Loka, a Chicana textile artist based in San Diego’s Barrio Logan.

Their artworks delve into themes such as shared symbolism, unique perspectives, reimagined boundaries, the necessity of design, and design as a tool for reconstruction, offering viewers a profound exploration of our region’s cultural tapestry.

“With Espacios & Lines, we are thrilled to showcase the diversity and uniqueness of our shared region to visitors from all over the world,” said Kimberly Becker, President, and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.

The artists’ creations will be exhibited in both pre- and post-security areas throughout Terminal 2.

The World Design Capital title, awarded biennially by the World Design Organization, honors cities leveraging design to foster economic, social, cultural, and environmental progress. Marking a historic first in WDO’s history, the joint recognition of San Diego and Tijuana underscores our region’s pioneering spirit, casting a global spotlight on our innovative approach to design.

Throughout the year, we will be supporting and presenting design-driven events that align with our mission to transform and elevate our region,” said Mai Nguyen, Board Chair of WDC 2024 and Director of UC San Diego Design Lab. “We are proud to have Espacios & Lines at San Diego International Airport — a main gateway into the region — as a designated exhibition for the year under WDC 2024.”
