In 2023, SATA Group airlines experienced sustained growth in passenger numbers, totaling 2.4 million passengers. This marked a substantial 40% increase compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019 and a notable 24.8% rise compared to 2022.

Throughout all quarters of the year, SATA Air Açores carried approximately 952 thousand passengers, while Azores Airlines transported around 1.4 million passengers, constituting 39.7% and 60.3% of the total passengers carried, respectively.

The overall flight occupancy rate (Load Factor) demonstrated a positive trend, reaching 79.1% in 2023. This marked a growth of +1.3 percentage points compared to 2019 and +5.6 percentage points compared to the previous year. The third quarter of 2023 saw the highest Load Factor recorded since 2019, reaching 83.7%. Additionally, the airline regularity index surpassed 95%, with only 4.5% of flights canceled, primarily due to adverse weather conditions, out of a total of 28,437 flights conducted.

Teresa Gonçalves, President of the SATA Group, attributed the significant increase in passengers to renewed confidence in SATA Group airlines and emphasized the collective effort that contributed to positive passenger experiences.

Despite industry challenges, SATA Group airlines maintained their distinction, surpassing the demand levels recorded by IATA in November 2023. The growth highlighted the increasing appeal of the destinations served, particularly in connecting flights between North America and Europe.

Azores Airlines played a pivotal role in the positive evolution, carrying almost 1.5 million passengers in 2023, reflecting a growth of +52.8% compared to 2019 and +33.4% compared to 2022. Notably, North American routes experienced a growth of +54.2%, contributing to 23% of total passengers carried.

Domestically, Azores Airlines maintained its relevance, recording a +29% increase in passengers on routes to mainland Portugal and Madeira. The airline achieved a flight occupancy rate of 82.8%, showing improvements compared to 2019 and 2022.

SATA Air Açores, responsible for inter-island connections, demonstrated consistent growth by carrying nearly one million passengers in 2023, reflecting a +24.1% increase compared to 2019 and +13.7% compared to 2022. Despite the increase in flights, the airline maintained a regularity rate above 94.9%, with only 5.1% of flights canceled, mainly due to adverse weather conditions.

The overall success and growth recorded by SATA Group airlines in 2023 underscored their commitment to providing excellent services.
