SWISS Federal Railways (SBB) has announced the procurement of five additional Giruno high-speed Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) capable of speeds up to 250km/h from Stadler, aimed at bolstering the expansion of its cross-border services into Italy starting from 2026.

The decision is motivated by a consistent increase in the demand for travel to Italy, prompting both SBB and Trenitalia to enhance their service offerings, particularly along the Gotthard route. The SFr 170 million transaction represents an extension of an initial contract signed in 2014 for 92 trains, from which SBB had previously ordered 29 trains. The delivery of these trains was concluded in 2021, and they currently facilitate services connecting Basle/Zürich with Lugano/Milan, in addition to routes extending to Genoa, Bologna, and Venice.

An earlier option within the contract for seven trains, valued at SFr 250 million, was activated in June 2022, with the delivery of these trains anticipated to commence within the year. These trains are slated to enter operational service between Switzerland and Germany via Basle by 2026.

Constructed at Stadler’s manufacturing facility in Bussnang, Switzerland, the single-deck, 11-carriage Giruno trains span 202 metres in length and are designed to accommodate a total of 810 passengers when operated in conjunction. They are distinguished by their adaptable low-floor entrance systems, engineered to align with the varying platform heights encountered across Switzerland, Austria, Italy (550mm), and Germany (760mm).

The onboard amenities of these trains are notably advanced, offering double the requisite number of spaces for wheelchair users, alongside accessible toilet facilities. Further enhancing passenger comfort and convenience, the trains are outfitted with Wi-Fi connectivity, power outlets at every seat, spacious luggage storage options, gender-specific toilets, and energy-efficient LED lighting.

This significant investment in high-speed rail infrastructure is poised to have a profound impact on tourism, facilitating smoother and more efficient travel between Switzerland and key Italian destinations. The introduction of these new services, particularly along the scenic Gotthard route, is expected to attract a greater number of tourists, drawn by the convenience and comfort of high-speed rail travel. As a result, this initiative is likely to bolster tourism not only by providing easier access to popular destinations but also by enhancing the overall travel experience, from the journey’s start to its conclusion.
