Fourteen months after Scoot’s agreement to include Embraer jets in its fleet, the Singaporean budget airline took delivery of its first E190-E2 aircraft. This event took place at Embraer’s headquarters in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil. The delivery, which occurred on April 11, was significant as it marked the first time a Singaporean carrier incorporated an aircraft from the Brazilian manufacturer into its fleet.

The handover ceremony was attended by Scoot’s CEO, Leslie Thng, and other top executives from Scoot, who had traveled to Brazil to see the aircraft. Mr. Thng shared his excitement about the new addition to their fleet, noting that it was the culmination of over a year’s work in fine-tuning the aircraft’s specifications to meet their operational goals.

The new jet, which boasts an all-economy layout and seats 112 passengers, is now the smallest commercial aircraft operating out of Changi Airport. Its two-by-two seating arrangement is a unique feature compared to the current Airbus and Boeing models in Scoot’s fleet, which Mr. Thng believes will enhance passenger comfort.

Scoot’s COO, Ng Chee Keong, commented on the rapid introduction of the aircraft into service, highlighting it as an uncommon achievement in the aviation industry. The aircraft, named Explorer 3.0, departed from Brazil on April 12 and arrived in Singapore on April 15. Before entering commercial service, it will undergo final regulatory approvals.

Explorer 3.0’s journey to Singapore included several stops across various continents for refueling and crew rest, demonstrating its long-range capability of approximately 5,300 km. Post-arrival, Scoot plans to conduct internal preparatory activities to ensure the crew and engineers are fully trained and familiar with the new jet.

Initially, the Embraer aircraft will serve six destinations in Southeast Asia, including new routes to Koh Samui and Sibu, which were previously less accessible due to aircraft size restrictions or economic feasibility.

Further deliveries of Embraer jets are scheduled over the next two years, with the next aircraft expected by the end of April and more following in September. These additions underline Scoot’s strategic expansion in Southeast Asia and beyond, bolstering its network and operational flexibility.

Representatives from Embraer and the leasing company Azorra also expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential impact on the Southeast Asian market, envisioning that Scoot’s successful operation of the E190-E2 could attract more carriers in the region to consider similar fleet enhancements.
