Tourists are lauding a unique ‘honesty box’ campsite near Achmelvich Bay in the Scottish Highlands, a mere 100 meters from a beach often likened to the Caribbean for its pristine waters and white sands. Achmelvich Bay, a highlight on the North Coast 500 route, Scotland’s scenic equivalent to America’s Route 66, gained international recognition last year as one of the world’s top beaches.
However, recent works on the sole public car park granting access to this beach presented a challenge for visitors. In response, a local landowner has offered his property as an alternative parking solution, requesting contributions to an ‘Honesty Box’ as a token of appreciation.
This arrangement invites a minimal fee of £1 per hour for parking or £15 for an overnight stay in a motorhome, rates significantly lower than those typically charged by the local council.
While contributions to the box are optional, the landowner hopes for visitors’ goodwill in exchange for using his land and the available public toilet facilities. This generous gesture has sparked considerable enthusiasm among tourists, many of whom have shared their positive experiences and gratitude in the NC500 – Accommodation, Sights, and Tips Facebook group.
This act of kindness not only facilitates access to the beach but also exemplifies the community spirit, making the scenic North Coast 500 route even more appealing to travelers.
