GTA describes the Ghana Tourism Information System as a “transformative digital platform” that centralises tourism data collection, licensing, inspections and levy management. The Authority, a state agency under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture responsible for regulating and promoting tourism, is using the GTIS to modernise how it carries out its mandate of marketing, licensing, classifying and developing tourism facilities.

The platform’s official launch in May 2026 builds on a broader digitalisation drive that GTA leadership had already flagged at the 2025 National Tourism Awards, where they outlined a vision of integrated tools to enhance transparency, efficiency and convenience for both businesses and visitors. GTIS is presented as the backbone of this vision, with additional consumer‑facing products such as the planned “Experience Ghana” mobile app and virtual reality experiences expected to plug into the same digital ecosystem.

Unified Platform For Licensing, Levies And Inspections

According to GTA’s own communication, GTIS allows tourism operators to complete the entire licensing cycle online, from initial registration to renewals, without needing to queue at physical offices. Through a single portal, businesses can create accounts, submit their documentation, track application status, schedule or record inspections and download or print approved licences once issued.

The system also integrates a Levy Portal which enables enterprises to file and pay statutory tourism levies electronically, addressing long‑standing delays and revenue leakages linked to manual collection methods. By consolidating these functions, the GTIS gives GTA a unified dashboard for monitoring compliance and financial flows across accommodation, travel trade, food and beverage and other registered tourism categories.

Public Verification And Consumer Protection

A notable feature of the GTIS is its public‑facing verification tool, which lets travellers and partners search for licensed tourism businesses in real time via web or mobile. GTA emphasises that this capability is intended to empower consumers to check the authenticity of hotels, tour operators and other services before booking, thereby reducing the risk of fraud and enhancing confidence in Ghana’s tourism brand.

Instructional content shared around the launch shows how users can query the system using a business name or licence number and receive immediate confirmation of status, including whether a licence is current or expired. This transparency aligns with wider Ghana.gov efforts to provide verifiable digital records for public services and contributes to a more predictable operating environment for both domestic and international visitors.

Addressing Growth Pressures And Data Gaps

Sector analyses from international and national sources highlight that Ghana’s tourism industry has expanded steadily, contributing significantly to GDP and attracting increasing levels of foreign and domestic investment. As the number of accommodation facilities and tourism‑related enterprises has multiplied, GTA has faced mounting pressures to manage licensing, inspections and data collection using legacy, largely manual systems.

By centralising information flows, the GTIS is expected to close critical data gaps that previously limited the Authority’s ability to analyse trends, plan infrastructure and design targeted support measures. Real‑time dashboards and analytics built into the system will enable GTA to monitor registrations by region and subsector, track levy compliance and generate evidence for policy decisions, aligning with national goals of positioning tourism as a major pillar of economic transformation.

Leadership Vision For Smart Tourism Governance

In outlining GTA’s digital roadmap, Chief Executive Marilyn Maame Efua Houadjeto has framed the GTIS as a foundation for broader innovations aimed at both businesses and travellers. Beyond the core licensing and levy functions, she has highlighted planned tools such as a Tourism Business Manager module, to help operators manage guest data, track expenses and improve operational efficiency, and the consumer‑focused “Experience Ghana” app for browsing, booking and paying for tourism services.

Houadjeto has also linked the Authority’s digital transformation to national sustainability initiatives, referencing plans to seek funding for solar‑powered facilities and eco‑lodges under Ghana’s “Green Ghana” agenda. In this framing, GTIS is not an isolated IT project but part of an integrated approach that combines data‑driven governance, sustainable infrastructure and international promotion, including opening GTA offices in U.S. cities such as New York, Atlanta and Chicago.

Integration With Wider E Government And E Visa Reforms

The rollout of GTIS dovetails with Ghana’s broader e‑government push, anchored by platforms like Ghana.gov, which centralise digital services and payments for multiple ministries and agencies. GTA’s use of an online portal for tourism licensing and levy collection reflects this national direction and is expected to ease interactions between operators, banks and the state.

Complementary reforms include preparations for an electronic visa (e‑visa) system, scheduled to be introduced in 2026 to simplify entry formalities for international visitors. While managed by different entities, the co‑existence of GTIS and an e‑visa platform underscores Ghana’s ambition to digitise both the “front end” (traveller entry) and “back end” (sector regulation) of its tourism value chain, creating a smoother experience for visitors and a more efficient framework for governance.
