With Spring Break upon us, local school districts are out, marking a bustling period for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). For those out of the travel loop or seasoned travelers alike, a smooth journey begins with forward planning, readiness, and adaptability. SEA is set to welcome approximately 3.18 million travelers between March 23 and April 14, mirroring figures from 2023. Notably, March 29 and April 5 are anticipated to be the peak travel days, with passenger counts expected at 153,000 and 162,000, respectively. The days leading up to and following these dates are also expected to see high traffic, each surpassing the 140,000 mark. Morning hours before 9:00 a.m. see a significant share of SEA’s daily foot traffic, leading to crowded conditions at security checkpoints and entrance drives, with additional busy periods in the afternoon and late evening.
To navigate SEA Airport effortlessly during this busy season, consider these tips:
- Arrival Timing: For domestic flights, arrive at the terminal at least two hours ahead of your boarding time, and three hours prior for international flights, accounting for the journey from parking or drop-off points.
- Traffic Avoidance: Explore alternative transportation to the airport to dodge traffic jams, including public transport, airport parking, taxis, rideshares, scheduled airport shuttles, door-to-door services, or shuttle options.
- Alternative Drop-off/Pick-up Strategies: During peak hours, consider using the Lower Arrivals Drive for drop-offs or the Upper Departures Drive for pick-ups. Flexibility between lanes can save time as both lead to the terminal.
- SEA Reserved Parking: Secure a parking spot on Floor 4 in advance, especially during Spring Break, to ensure availability. A short walk across the skybridge takes you directly to the terminal.
- Efficient Parking: Look out for green lights signaling open parking spots in the airport garage, guided by the Automated Parking Guidance System.
- Check-in Efficiency: With no bags to check and boarding pass in hand, head straight to the security checkpoint, bypassing check-in desks.
- Airline Preparation: Familiarize yourself with your airline’s baggage policies, check-in procedures, and download their apps for a streamlined experience.
- Early Security Checkpoint Access: Take advantage of the SEA Spot Saver service, now available from 4:00 a.m., to reserve a TSA checkpoint time up to five days before flying.
- Security Checkpoint Readiness: Prepare for security by removing electronics larger than a cell phone and any food or liquids from your carry-on. Be ready to present your boarding pass and adhere to the latest ID and documentation requirements.
- International Travel Tip: For trips to Mexico or other international destinations, download the Mobile Passport Control app to expedite your customs process upon return to SEA.
