Seychelles has declared a state of emergency following an explosion at an explosives store on the main island, Mahe, and subsequent heavy rains that triggered flooding.

The blast caused “massive damage” to the Providence Industrial area and surrounding regions, prompting President Wavel Ramkalawan to declare a state of emergency on December 7.

The explosion, which wrecked buildings, was followed by severe flooding, claiming at least two lives. Streets were covered in mud, debris, and uprooted trees, as seen in footage broadcast on national television.

In response to the emergency, President Ramkalawan’s office issued a statement urging everyone to stay at home. All schools were closed, and free movement was restricted to workers in essential services and individuals traveling. The government’s official Visit Seychelles account on social media assured that the international airport and ferries between the islands remained operational for tourists.

The Seychelles, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant marine life, is a popular tourist destination. Comprising 115 islands, it is the least populous country in Africa, with approximately 100,000 residents. The state of emergency reflects the severity of the situation, with the government taking measures to manage the aftermath of the explosion and flooding, ensuring the safety of the population and visitors.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of small island nations to natural disasters and industrial accidents. As Seychelles responds to the immediate crisis, there will likely be a focus on recovery efforts, infrastructure repair, and support for those affected. The international community may also extend assistance to help the country recover from the dual impact of the explosion and flooding, especially considering Seychelles’ significance as a tourist destination and its economic reliance on tourism.

Investigations into the cause of the explosion and assessments of the damage will likely play a crucial role in understanding the extent of the impact and determining the necessary steps for recovery and rebuilding. The declaration of a state of emergency underscores the urgency and seriousness of the situation, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to address the aftermath of this unfortunate incident in Seychelles.
