San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has unveiled plans for an enhancement project on one of its taxiways, aiming to facilitate smoother and safer aircraft exits after landing. The initiative entails the temporary closure of Runway 28 Left for a period of five months, starting on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. The objective is to realign taxiways “Delta” and “Tango,” crucial for aircraft departing from Runways 28 Left and 28 Right. During this closure, construction crews will dismantle the existing taxiways and reconstruct Delta and Tango as distinct, non-intersecting routes, aligning with the latest safety standards.

Anticipated completion of the project is set for no later than Monday, July 1, 2024, strategically timed ahead of the Independence Day weekend and the peak summer travel season. Throughout this temporary closure, SFO plans to redirect all incoming flights to Runway 28 Right under standard operating conditions. However, travelers are advised that the reduced runway capacity may lead to potential delays. SFO is actively collaborating with airlines and the FAA to optimize flight schedules and mitigate disruptions. Between January and April, approximately one-third of flights may encounter delays ranging from 30 to 60 minutes, particularly during peak demand periods. This impact may affect both domestic and international flights, prompting airlines to assess and potentially modify schedules in the later months of May and June.

The San Francisco International Airport Commission has entrusted Golden Gate Constructors with the contract for this federally funded project, projecting an estimated construction cost of $55 million.
