According to statistics from local officials, the cultural tourism sector in Shanghai, the capital of east China, grew quickly in the first half of this year, both in terms of traffic and income.
More than 139 million domestic travelers came to Shanghai in the first six months, bringing in more than 155 billion yuan (about 21.56 billion USD) in tourismrevenue.
According to the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, both have had annual growth rates of over 100%.
The consumption of tourism in Shanghai during the first half of the year totalled 478.45 billion yuan, up 77% year over year, according to statistics from card payment giant China UnionPay.
Above 22,000 commercial performances were held in Shanghai during that time, attracting close to 12 million visitors and generating 832 million yuan in box office receipts—a notable improvement above pre-COVID levels.
