Small Luxury Hotels of the World Expands Considerate Collection and Introduces Ten Minimum Sustainability Standards

Published on November 28, 2025

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) has recently announced its Sustainability Call to Action (CTA) Report, marking an important accomplishment as the company prepares to celebrate its 35-year anniversary in 2025. The report outlines and reviews the company’s sustainability endeavors, including experiences derived from the Considerate Collection and future partnerships, along with the company’s commitments in the eco-conscious luxury hospitality sector.

With more and more travelers adopting sustainable travel practices over the years, the company is responding to travelers’ sustainable commitments in the report, and building a network of sustainable luxury properties. To further sustain responsible hospitality practices, the company outlines its committed social and environmental practices through the entire hospitality suite/report.

The Call-to-Action Report underscores SLH’s ongoing commitment to sustainability through a range of impactful initiatives. Since the brand’s inception, sustainable practices have been at the forefront, with a strong focus on supporting small, independent hotels that embody eco-conscious principles. The report celebrates the Considerate Collection, a group of 82 hotels worldwide that have passed stringent sustainability criteria and now represent the pioneers of responsible luxury within the SLH portfolio.

This year marks the fourth anniversary of the Considerate Collection, which has grown significantly over the past 12 months, adding 24 new properties to its ranks. The Considerate Collection includes some of the world’s most sustainable luxury properties, such as Lilløy Lindenberg in Norway, Quinta Da Comporta in Portugal, and Laguna Coast Resort in Greece, which all offer eco-conscious, high-end experiences for travelers.

These hotels are celebrated for their commitment to sustainability, whether through water conservation, local sourcing, or eco-friendly design, and are carefully selected for their environmental practices. Notably, these hotels focus on promoting local cultures, supporting regional artisans, and minimizing their environmental impact.

10 Minimum Standards for SLH Hotels by 2027

In line with its commitment to sustainability, SLH has introduced the 10 Minimum Standards of Sustainability, which are set to become mandatory for every hotel in the SLH network by 2027. These standards aim to address key environmental issues such as energy and water efficiency, local and ethical procurement, and Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) within the hospitality industry.

The new standards are designed to guide all SLH properties now more than 650 hotels across 90+ countries in making measurable improvements to their environmental impact. The standards also provide tangible examples and strategies to implement these practices, helping hotels move forward on their sustainability journeys.

As part of this initiative, SLH is encouraging hotels to improve their energy management systems, adopt water-saving techniques, and engage with the local community through more responsible and transparent practices. The new standards provide a holistic blueprint for sustainability in the luxury hospitality sector, allowing travelers to book their stays with the assurance that their accommodations are actively contributing to sustainable tourism.

Fostering Sustainable Connections with Industry Partnerships

SLH’s efforts toward a sustainable future are reinforced by strong industry partnerships. In the Call-to-Action Report, SLH highlights its collaboration with organizations like OutThere, a leading LGBTQIA+ travel journal, and IncluCare, a consulting firm focused on accessibility in tourism. These partnerships ensure that SLH’s approach to sustainability is inclusive and considers the diverse needs of all travelers.

The partnership with OutThere has helped SLH audit and implement more inclusive practices at its member properties, ensuring that every guest regardless of gender or identity—feels welcome and comfortable. Additionally, SLH’s collaboration with IncluCare has made strides toward improving the accessibility of hotels, offering specialized services for guests with sensory, physical, or neurodivergent needs.

Facilitating Knowledge Sharing and Regenerative Practices

As part of the sustainability initiative, SLH hosted the inaugural Considerate Connections Retreat in September 2025 at Dar Ahlam in Morocco. This gathering brought together leaders from the Considerate Collection for a deep dive into regenerative hospitality principles. The retreat focused on the importance of sustainability in luxury travel and how small, independent hotels are uniquely positioned to lead the way.

In addition to this, SLH has committed to continuing its Considerate Connections series, which will foster global discussions about sustainability within the hospitality industry. By connecting its Considerate Collection hotels with one another, SLH hopes to inspire further collaborative solutions and creative action on issues such as climate change, waste management, and eco-friendly practices.

SLH’s Vision for the Future

Looking forward, Small Luxury Hotels of the World is committed to continuing its journey towards sustainable tourism. With a growing portfolio of eco-conscious hotels, the brand aims to set a new industry standard for luxury travel. Through its 10 Minimum Standards, expanded Considerate Collection, and global partnerships, SLH is laying the groundwork for a future where luxury hospitality can go hand-in-hand with environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
