Social media, marketing transforms hidden locations into popular tourist attractions: CII WR Annual Regional Meeting

Every traveller has a journey, and the journey of a traveller can be divided into five stages, said Vinay Deshpande, Senior Vice President & Head of Digital & IT, Indian Hotels Company Ltd. He was speaking at the session on Boosting Tourism Sector in Western Region with Technology, which was part of the CII Conference on ‘The Next Phase of Globalization for Indian Businesses’ organised at the CII Western Region Annual Meeting 2023.


The five stages of a traveller encompass: journey of a traveller, dreaming, planning, booking and finally visiting the destination and experience sharing.


He further stated that Indian Hotels Corporation ensures that digital interventions such as IoT, hyper personalization, robotics, and AI (virtual help) are implemented at every level, which benefits consumers. He emphasised the importance of social media and marketing activities in transforming hidden locations into popular tourist attractions.


When discussing various types of tourism, such as medical tourism, CSR tourism, and business tourism, Vishal Kamat, Chief Executive Officer, Kamat Hotels India Ltd, emphasised the need of digitising pilgrimage tourism. He also suggested that private businesses and the government work together to create a suitable atmosphere for pilgrimage tourism.


Ujjwal Mathur, Co-Chairman, CII WR Subcommittee on Innovation, Technology, and Digitalization 2022-23 & Senior Vice President & Country Head, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, emphasised the importance of western India in tourism, as well as the role of disruptive technologies in attracting more domestic and international tourists.
