A year of renewed movement across Asia has been reflected in the strong performance recorded by Korean Air, as more than 16 million passengers were transported during 2025. This impressive flow of travelers demonstrated a clear resurgence in regional tourism, supported by evolving policies and shifting traveler behavior. Throughout the year, Korean Air, Japan, and China emerged as central anchors in the aviation landscape, with short-haul mobility gaining remarkable momentum. A steady revival in leisure and business travel converged with the convenience of enhanced visa policies, drawing more travelers toward highly connected hubs such as Seoul. As a result, widespread tourism activity was observed across major Asian destinations, with Tokyo maintaining its leading position among preferred routes.
This renewed demand was also shaped by growing interest from long-haul travelers, particularly from the United States and China, whose presence contributed significantly to the airline’s international passenger share. Korean Air’s ability to meet this growing interest, while simultaneously expanding its service offerings and fleet operations, marked 2025 as a transformative year for South Korea’s flagship carrier. This upward trajectory provided a strong foundation for the airline as it approached the next phase of its strategic integration with Asiana Airlines.
A strong rebound in travel demand across Asia was observed as Korean Air transported 16.49 million passengers between January 1 and November 10, 2025. This marked one of the airline’s most robust operational years since the full return of global tourism. During this period, more than 280 million kilometers were flown across the network, representing a scale comparable to nearly 7,000 laps around Earth. This extensive movement reflected the restoration of confidence among travelers and the reactivation of regional tourism corridors connecting South Korea with major Asian destinations.
The network continued to thrive through a mix of short-haul leisure travel, cross-border business trips, and rising demand from international visitors. These combined trends reinforced Korean Air’s position as a crucial facilitator of international connectivity in the region.
Japan maintained its position as the most sought-after destination among Korean Air passengers for the second consecutive year. Tokyo led the rankings, followed by Osaka and Fukuoka, reaffirming Japan’s ongoing appeal among South Korean travelers. Favorable travel times, extensive cultural interest, and seamless air connectivity contributed to this continued popularity. Additionally, Bangkok secured its place among the top leisure routes, supported by Thailand’s consistently high demand among regional travelers.
These recurring travel choices emphasized a broader shift toward short-haul tourism, where affordability, cultural exploration, and frequent getaway opportunities played a defining role in passenger decision-making.

A significant increase in travel to China was recorded throughout 2025, fundamentally shaped by the country’s visa-free entry program for Korean nationals. This policy, implemented in late 2024 and extended through 2026, enabled Korean travelers to visit China for up to 15 days without a visa. As a result, previously moderate routes experienced accelerated growth. Shanghai welcomed an additional 128,000 passengers compared with the previous year, while Beijing recorded an increase of 71,000 travelers.
This new ease of movement encouraged both leisure and business travel, strengthening China’s regional travel ties with South Korea. As more Korean travelers embraced these relaxed entry requirements, a sustained upward trend was projected for 2026.
A clear distribution of passenger demographics was recorded. Individuals in their 30s and 40s formed the largest traveler segment, making up 40 percent of total passengers. This group demonstrated strong interest in both regional leisure travel and international business movement. Travelers aged 50 and 60 accounted for 30 percent, indicating increased participation among family groups and senior tourists.
Foreign nationals represented 35 percent of total passengers. Among them, Americans and Chinese each accounted for nearly one-quarter, supporting a broader recovery in inbound travel to South Korea. This international presence emphasized Korean Air’s expanding appeal and helped solidify its role in linking major global travel hubs with destinations across Asia.
Fleet operations saw continued modernization, with Korean Air initiating Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner services and unveiling updated Prestige Business Class seats. These improvements enhanced comfort and supported the airline’s wider strategy to elevate its premium travel experience.
Passenger behavior offered further insights into evolving preferences. The most frequent traveler completed 216 flights during the year, reflecting the ongoing importance of high-value corporate and loyalty passengers. A total of 5,192 unaccompanied minors travelled with specialist assistance, while nearly 32,000 pets were carried internationally, highlighting the airline’s focus on diverse passenger needs.
Entertainment and dining trends were also monitored. Captain America: Brave New World emerged as the most-viewed in-flight movie, while Korean entertainment retained strong popularity. In Prestige Business Class, the leading meal choice was stir-fried spicy octopus with rice, a selection that showcased the appeal of Korean cuisine in premium cabins.
As Korean Air prepared for full integration with Asiana Airlines by 2027, the positive performance recorded throughout 2025 underscored its strength as a dominant regional carrier. The steady expansion of passenger traffic, combined with strong interest in travel to Japan and revitalized demand for China, positioned the airline for continued growth.
Tourism activity across Asia was expected to remain robust into 2026, supported by evolving policies, enhanced flight connectivity, and the ongoing return of business and leisure travelers.
