Spain saw a significant resurgence in international tourism during the first half of 2023, with 37.5 million foreign tourists visiting the country, marking a substantial 24% increase compared to the same period in 2022, according to the government’s announcement on Wednesday.
While this figure fell slightly short of the pre-pandemic levels of 2019, which saw 38 million tourists, officials view it as a strong indicator of the tourism industry’s robust recovery post the COVID-19 health crisis.
British visitors topped the list, with approximately 8 million tourists, followed by around 5 million tourists each from France and Germany. Spain’s heavy reliance on tourism is evident, as this sector contributes a significant 12% to its gross domestic product.
Among the various regions, Catalonia in the northeastern part of the country, which includes popular destinations like Barcelona and the Costa Brava, emerged as the most visited area, attracting a considerable number of international travelers.
The rebound in tourism is a positive sign for Spain’s economy and reflects the efforts made to attract visitors amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic. While the figures may not have reached pre-COVID levels, the substantial increase in tourist numbers bodes well for the country’s tourism industry and indicates a strong step towards recovery and growth in the sector.
