Spain La Palma eyes cable cars to enhance tourism, improve access to rugged terrain, and showcase stunning lava flows from the 2021 volcanic eruption.
La Palma is exploring the development of cable car systems across three locations to enhance its tourism offerings and improve access to remote natural areas. The local government, known as the Cabildo, aims to diversify tourist experiences by providing elevated views of the island’s dramatic landscapes, including the striking lava flows from the 2021 volcanic eruption.

Officials believe these aerial routes could not only boost visitor appeal but also support transportation in rugged terrain. The Cabildo is currently evaluating three proposed routes, including one linking Hoya Grande to Roque de Los Muchachos and another connecting to Puerto de Tazacorte.
Feasibility studies are underway, with decisions expected in the coming months on whether the initiative could provide long-term benefits for both residents and tourists. The 2021 eruption on Cumbre Viejo, which lasted nearly three months, displaced thousands and caused over 842 million euros in damage, making the island’s recovery and reinvention a priority.
