Spirit Airlines Expands Operations in Bihar, Launching Nonstop Domestic and International Flights

Published on August 6, 2025

Spirit Airlines has started operating in Bihar as part of the UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik) program of the Government of India, which aims to improve regional air connectivity in hitherto inaccessible areas. Under these plans, Spirit Airlines also aims to establish a network of domestic and international flights connecting Bihar to important Indian and Nepali cities to improve inter-regional connectivity.

With this launch, Spirit has furthered its efforts to expand its operations in India and to improve the travel choices available to the residents of Bihar at a reasonable cost. Spirit Airlines is still committed to fostering the growth of regional economies, and the flights will create new gateways for the circulation of people and freight, which will stimulate the economy and employment opportunities.

Connecting New Airports in Bihar with Major Cities

As part of its operational expansion strategy for Bihar, Spirit Airlines will begin flight operations from newly constructed regional airports in Saharsa, Munger, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Raxaul, Valmiki Nagar, Birpur, and Bihta.

These airports will serve key domestic airports. Varanasi, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai will now be accessible. Travelers now have more access not just to local destinations, but to key cities across India. Spirit Airlines is connecting international routes to domestic flights, which in turn enhances the international connectivity of Bihar and its neighboring states.

Bihta will serve as a regional gateway to the rest of the country and will also serve as a primary hub for Patna airport. With enhanced connectivity, the diaspora will be able to access other parts of the country easily, which will improve the economy and tourism of Bihar.

Extending Connectivity to Nepal

Spirit Airlines has been given permission to link Nepal to Bihar international airports through operational flights. The airline will conduct international flights from Muzaffarpur to Kathmandu and Janakpur, from Birpur to Rajbiraj and Biratnagar, from Valmiki Nagar to Kathmandu and Bhairahawa, and Bihar to Kathmandu.

With a substantial Nepalese population in India, these routes will be indispensable in connecting families and businesses which travel back and forth between the two countries. These new international routes will enhance the relations with business, culture, and tourism. The rich culture and scenic beauty of Nepal is increasingly popular among Indian travelers, and Spirit Airlines is crossing every t to make the travel between the two countries as easy as possible.

A Diverse Fleet for Expanded Operations

The Spirit Airlines fleet will now consist of the short takeoff and landing (STOL) Islander BN2T-4S and the King Air 250, which will allow the airline to meet both Domestic and International Spirit Airlines fleet. The newer Islander BN2T-4s can carry both passengers, cargo and even conduct medical evacuations, which can really benefit the smaller regional airports developed under the UDAN scheme.

Also, part of the Spirit fleet is the King Air 250, which is a high performance aircraft that offers both improved passenger casual and cabin pressurization. These aircraft are designed to support multi-mission operations for serving both Bihar to rest of India and other International hubs.

Integrated Door-to-Door Travel Experience

As a new addition to regional connectivity, Spirit Airlines has collaborated with DTDS Travel & Tour Planner Pvt. Ltd. to provide integrated travel services with complete door-to-door offers. This service enables passengers to purchase flight tickets together with home pick-up and drop-off services. This initiative aims to provide services to all categories of travelers, starting from business travelers to families.

This partnership will provide convenience to improve the travel experience, especially for people coming from rural and neglected regions, by streamlining access to air travel services.

Economic and Employment Benefits for Bihar

With Spirit Airlines set to leave a mark in Bihar, its economic impact, especially in job opportunities, will be unparalleled. As an active airline, Spirit is planning to recruit more than 70 pilots, most of whom will be residents of Bihar. In addition, the airline is set to offer training and financing programs, enabling local talent to take part in the aviation industry.

In addition, Spirit will also fulfill the need for new positions in airport security, logistics, and tourism. In conjunction with DTDS Group, Spirit will recruit and train the needed personnel, marking a new era in the state’s aviation history.

Government Support and Infrastructure Development

Bihar’s Spirit Airlines expansion initiative has been made possible by the Udan scheme with the aid of the government of Bihar. The Bihar cabinet made stride towards developing the Birpur, Muzaffarpur, Saharsa, Birpur and Valmiki Nagar airports by issuing an MoU on the 17th of June 2025, they also plan to inject 150 crores in infrastructure and overall airline as well as passenger facilities to boost airline and passenger support.
