The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) recently participated in the AdventureNEXT Fiji event, held from November 20-22, 2024, at the prestigious InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa. This event underscored the growing potential of adventure travel in the Pacific and highlighted its role in promoting sustainable tourism development. AdventureNEXT Fiji, guided by the theme “Toso Vata” or “Move Together,” demonstrated the power of collaboration, innovation, and shared efforts to propel the tourism sector forward.
For SPTO, this event was an important step toward embracing adventure travel as a transformative and vital part of the region’s tourism growth. As the tourism landscape in the Pacific continues to evolve, SPTO is keen to explore new and dynamic avenues that will support the region’s broader goals for tourism development. AdventureNEXT Fiji provided an excellent platform for SPTO and its member countries to come together and exchange ideas, explore new opportunities, and reinforce their commitment to sustainable tourism practices.

The SPTO’s participation in AdventureNEXT Fiji reflected its commitment to fostering innovative strategies that advance the region’s tourism sector while aligning with the principles of sustainability and cultural preservation. Christopher Cocker, SPTO’s CEO, emphasized the importance of such initiatives for the future of the Pacific region’s tourism industry. “Adventure travel represents a dynamic and growing segment of the global tourism market,” said Cocker. “By participating in AdventureNEXT Fiji, we unlock new opportunities for the Pacific, enhancing our members’ tourism offerings while staying true to our shared values of sustainability and cultural preservation.”
The event, which was organized by the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) and Tourism Fiji, included keynote sessions, interactive workshops, and invaluable networking opportunities with key stakeholders, industry leaders, and tourism professionals from around the globe. This gathering presented SPTO with the chance to actively engage with potential partners, share knowledge, and strengthen the region’s tourism strategies through collaboration.
Cocker further emphasized that knowledge sharing and mutual growth among SPTO member nations were vital for the future success of the Pacific’s tourism industry. The collective spirit and cooperation demonstrated during AdventureNEXT Fiji will provide lasting benefits to the region by helping to shape tourism development initiatives that are both economically and environmentally sustainable. “We are committed to building partnerships that ensure the Pacific remains a premier destination for travelers, offering unique and authentic experiences while safeguarding our environment and cultural heritage,” added Cocker.
AdventureNEXT Fiji served as an excellent platform for the Pacific to showcase its diverse travel experiences, vibrant cultures, and the region’s commitment to sustainability. SPTO’s booth at the event was designed to highlight the distinct tourism offerings of the region, including eco-tourism, adventure travel, and cultural immersion experiences. The event also provided an opportunity to promote the South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE) 2025 and the Pacific Storytelling Specialist Programme (PSSP), two key initiatives aimed at enhancing the region’s visibility in the global tourism market.
The SPTE 2025 will bring together international buyers and local suppliers to further develop tourism opportunities in the Pacific, focusing on sustainable practices that benefit local communities. The PSSP, meanwhile, is designed to support the region’s tourism stakeholders in effectively sharing the Pacific’s cultural narratives and stories with the world. These initiatives not only provide valuable exposure for the Pacific’s tourism sector but also help ensure that the region’s cultural heritage remains an integral part of its tourism offerings.
One of the highlights of SPTO’s involvement in AdventureNEXT Fiji was the opportunity to deepen its partnership with China’s tourism sector, as discussions on regional tourism collaboration intensified. Before the event, SPTO delegation members held a bilateral meeting with Ms. Xu Rong, the Deputy Director General of the Bureau of International Exchange and Cooperation at China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The meeting focused on SPTO’s new Strategic Plan 2025-2029, which outlines the organization’s vision for the future of Pacific tourism. The discussions emphasized the shared goals of promoting tourism as a vehicle for cultural exchange and economic growth.
“We are thrilled by the strong collaboration between the Pacific and China,” said Cocker. “Tourism has the power to connect people, fostering cross-cultural understanding and benefiting economies. Our partnership with China will continue to open doors for new tourism opportunities for both regions.”
Additionally, SPTO’s participation in AdventureNEXT Fiji further strengthened its relationship with Tourism Fiji, showcasing the region’s collective efforts in boosting tourism through sustainable practices and cultural exchange.
As SPTO looks to the future, the successful participation in AdventureNEXT Fiji marks just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Pacific tourism industry. The event highlighted the growing importance of adventure travel in the region, where visitors can enjoy an array of experiences ranging from eco-tourism and wildlife safaris to cultural immersion and island exploration.
SPTO’s ongoing commitment to sustainable tourism and cultural preservation will continue to guide its efforts as the region seeks to position itself as a top-tier global travel destination. Through partnerships, knowledge sharing, and regional collaboration, SPTO aims to create a more connected and resilient Pacific tourism sector that will provide long-term benefits for both travelers and the local communities they visit.
“We are incredibly optimistic about the future of Pacific tourism. Through initiatives like AdventureNEXT Fiji, we are not only showcasing the region’s beauty but also promoting a vision for tourism that values sustainability, cultural authenticity, and mutual respect,” concluded Cocker.
The Pacific Tourism Organisation’s (SPTO) participation in AdventureNEXT Fiji marked a significant step forward in the region’s journey to become a premier destination for adventure travel. By embracing innovation, collaboration, and sustainable practices, the Pacific continues to shine as a dynamic and evolving travel destination that offers something for every kind of traveler. As the region moves forward, its dedication to preserving its cultural and environmental treasures remains at the forefront of its tourism strategies.
