Sri Lanka tourism experiences turmoil, protests to save hospitality

Sri Lanka facing financial disaster in the middle of public anger and protests against the dearth of food and fuel, the tourism sector of the country, one of the key contributors to the economy of Sri Lanka was revitalizing in a slow manner after the pandemic hitting hard.


Sri Lanka is fighting a severe monetary crisis with food and fuel shortage impacting many in the island nation. The island’s economy has been in a free-fall since the onset of the pandemic is currently in the throes of a spiralling crisis, followed by medicines, food and power cuts shortages.


Many Colombo hotels have explained that they have suffered tremendous losses due to constant protests in the city as tourists are getting afraid.


To quote Kevin, a General Manager of Colombo Court Hotel in the city told ANI: “One main big reason is the current ongoing power cuts, hike in fuel prices and lack of essential items has been a big hit for us hoteliers as we cannot survive without electricity. We have set up own power banks because it is the main thing that tourists look for.”
