Sri Lanka Tourism sees record Indian tourists’ arrivals

Sri Lanka Tourism has embarked on an ambitious global campaign to significantly increase the influx of tourists from India. Launched in Mumbai, this strategic initiative saw the participation of Sri Lanka’s Tourism Minister among other high-profile delegates. With Indians currently making up over 20% of tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka, the campaign targets to capture 10% of the 50 million Indians who travel abroad annually. The country’s appeal is anchored in its rich heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and the warm hospitality of its people, as highlighted by Dr. Velson Vethody, Consul General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai.

Aiming to diversify its tourism portfolio, Sri Lanka is focusing on attracting tourists for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE), recognizing the potential in this segment. Thisum Jayasuriya, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, underscored this ambition by showcasing a list of potential MICE destinations within the country and announcing the development of new venues and hotels to accommodate the expected rise in tourist numbers.

In a novel move to draw more Indian visitors, Sri Lanka is developing a Ramayana Trail, a testament to the shared cultural and mythological ties between the two nations. This initiative, coupled with the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology extending scholarships to Indian students, underscores the multifaceted approach to strengthening bilateral relations through tourism and education.

The tourism surge in Sri Lanka is evident from the unprecedented 106% year-on-year increase in tourist arrivals, with around 9,000 visitors daily. Strengthening air connectivity, Sri Lankan Airlines plays a pivotal role, operating 95 flights connecting Sri Lanka with nine cities across India, including two daily flights between Mumbai and Colombo.

Harin Fernando, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Tourism, expressed gratitude towards India’s unwavering support, emphasizing the long-standing relationship between the two countries. This campaign not only aims to boost tourism numbers but also to enhance cultural exchange and economic ties, highlighting Sri Lanka’s commitment to becoming a prime destination for Indian tourists seeking unique and enriching travel experiences.
