Sri Lanka has experienced a remarkable increase in tourist arrivals, with numbers soaring by 16.5 percent to a total of 212,906 visitors in November 2025. This growth is part of an encouraging trend, as the total number of tourists to the island nation for the year has reached 2,103,593, a significant uptick compared to the previous year.
The tourism numbers from November not only show growth from the same month in 2024, but also exceed those of 2018, a year considered a milestone in Sri Lanka’s tourism recovery post-crisis. India and Russia have been the largest contributors to this surge, making up a substantial portion of the visitors. As Sri Lanka rebuilds and expands its tourism offerings, these figures highlight the country’s growing appeal to international travelers.

The Indian market remains the most significant, accounting for nearly 24 percent of all visitors in November, with a total of 51,391 tourists making their way to Sri Lanka. This is no surprise, given the long-standing cultural and geographical ties between the two countries, which have facilitated a steady flow of visitors across the years.
Russia also contributes heavily, with 24,953 Russian tourists arriving on the island in November. Russia’s strong presence in Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is reflective of the deepening relationship between the countries, as Russian tourists seek tropical getaways amidst the ongoing geopolitical situation in Europe.

Other key markets contributing to Sri Lanka’s tourism growth include the United Kingdom, with 16,915 tourists, and Germany, with 14,518 visitors in November. Both countries have long been established as significant players in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.
Australia and China also figure prominently in the list of top tourist sources, with 9,384 and 9,217 visitors, respectively. In addition to these markets, France (8,459), Poland (5,331), United States (5,284), and Spain (4,666) have added to the growing tally of international tourists exploring the charms of Sri Lanka.

The overall trend in 2025 shows that Sri Lanka is experiencing a strong recovery and growth in its tourism sector. By the end of November, total arrivals reached over 2.1 million, a figure that represents a 16.5 percent increase over the same period in 2024. This positive growth demonstrates the island nation’s ability to attract travelers from all corners of the globe, even amidst regional challenges.
For many countries, Sri Lanka remains an ideal vacation destination due to its unique offerings—whether it’s the stunning beaches of the South Coast, the ancient wonders of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, or the pristine beauty of Nuwara Eliya. Its diverse landscape and rich cultural heritage make it a sought-after location for tourists year-round.
Despite the positive trends, Cyclone Ditwah brought a temporary setback for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. The cyclone, which struck the island at the end of November, has caused some disruption, with tourists stranded in various parts of the country. The Sri Lankan Tourism Development Authority has provided a hotline for affected visitors, demonstrating the government’s responsiveness in ensuring the safety of all tourists during such natural disasters.
While Cyclone Ditwah impacted certain areas, the overall tourist infrastructure in Sri Lanka remains resilient. As the country navigates these challenges, efforts are being made to restore normalcy quickly, ensuring that travelers continue to enjoy the country’s offerings once the situation improves.
As we head into 2026, Sri Lanka’s growing appeal to international tourists signals a bright future for its tourism industry. With strong recovery and more visitors from India, Russia, and the West, the country is positioned to become an even more attractive destination for travelers seeking an exotic yet affordable getaway.
For now, the steady growth in arrivals underscores the optimism surrounding the Sri Lankan tourism sector. As the tourism infrastructure continues to improve, the country will likely continue to draw tourists from Asia, Europe, and beyond.
