Stadler, intercity electric multiple units

Stadler and GYSEV Zrt. have entered into an agreement for Stadler to deliver 13 (nine primary plus an option for an additional four) intercity electric multiple units (EMUs). These EMUs are slated for deployment along the routes connecting Sopron and Szombathely to Budapest by the year 2027. The innovative multisystem trains will be authorized to operate in both Hungary and Austria. The construction of the five-car trains, featuring aluminum car bodies, will be undertaken by Hungarian experts at Stadler’s Szolnok facility, renowned for its carbody craftsmanship. This deal marks a historical moment in Hungarian railway history, as it’s the first procurement of new intercity electric trains in three decades.

The arrangement includes a definitive order for nine units with an option to procure up to four additional trains. GYSEV has a three-month window from the contract’s activation date to finalize the number of optional units they wish to order from Stadler. According to the agreed timetable, Stadler is expected to deliver the first unit within 36 months, with the completion of the initial order projected within 44 months, enabling service on the specified routes. Additionally, Stadler is allocated an extra two years post-delivery to secure operational certification in Austria. The agreement’s effectuation is contingent upon securing financial backing, with GYSEV arranging financing through a European Investment Bank loan.

These new intercity EMUs signify a technological leap forward in terms of energy efficiency. GYSEV passengers may already be acquainted with the FLIRT trains, having previously acquired 20 units from Stadler across three transactions from 2013 to 2018. However, these new intercity models will showcase numerous advancements over the earlier models, including enhanced design aesthetics and improved service levels. Equipped with advanced electric motors, these trains promise reduced energy consumption and, consequently, lower lifecycle operating costs.

The trains, designed to accommodate flexible seating arrangements for summer and winter configurations, will measure 106.2 meters in length, reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h. The winter setup offers 280 seats, including 32 in first class. The summer configuration allows for the carriage of up to 18 bicycles by adjusting the number of second-class seats, catering to the seasonal increase in bicycle transport demand. Manufactured in accordance with the latest international standards, these trains are equipped with modern passenger amenities including a state-of-the-art information system, security cameras for passenger safety, charging outlets, and comfortable, air-conditioned, low-floor interiors. Additionally, the trains feature dining areas, vending machines for food and drinks, and are designed with longer intercity journey comforts in mind, including multiple toilet facilities.

The Szolnok factory’s role in producing the FLIRT series, Stadler’s flagship product, underscores the importance of local manufacturing. With over 2,500 units sold in 21 countries since 2002, the FLIRT has become synonymous with Hungarian rail travel, with GYSEV operating 20 units and MÁV operating 123. The Szolnok plant has been instrumental in producing nearly 1,000 FLIRT trains, translating into 3,883 car bodies. Depending on the final number of optional units ordered, up to 65 FLIRT IC coaches could be produced for GYSEV as part of this recent agreement.
