In an important moment for the global Tourism sector, the World Travel & Tourism Council and the Sustainable Tourism Global Center started by Saudi Arabia Ministry of Tourism, released the recent industry-shaping Environmental Impact Research data today.

In 2022, at the time of the WTTC Global Summit in Riyadh, the two organizations introduced the partnership and revealed the inaugural results comprising the accurate greenhouse gas emissions of the sector for the first time ever.

This signifies the most all-inclusive environmental data in Travel & Tourism’s history. The Minister of Tourism, Saudi Arabia, Mr. H.E. Ahmed Al Khateeb, said that they welcome this joint report introduced by the Ministry of Tourism of Saudi Arabia, and WTTC, as a vital resource for global decision makers. It offers key insights and exclusive impactful environmental research into the way Travel & Tourism has an impact on climate change and how it is affected by it.

Their research emphasizes the steady drop in terms of emissions intensity of Tourism in the last decade. Whilst the GDP growth of the sector averaged 4.3% yearly, emissions between 2010-2019 only increased by 2.5% annually. Still, the continued commitment to attain net zero emissions for the Tourism sector has
never been more important.

They determinedly believe that tourism is part of the solution and that is why Saudi Arabia has taken a prominent role to fast-track this change to encourage sustainability across the sector, defend nature and support communities.
