Superior, Wisconsin Museum to Explore Crash Site of Legendary American Ace’s Fighter Plane

The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center in Wisconsin will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of the smash of the fighter airplane allocated to America’s topmost World War II ace on Friday, March 22nd. The museum will declare a voyage to document Wisconsinite Richard Bong’s airplane in Papua New Guinea.


Bong’s fighter airplane is one of the most well-known airplanes of World War II. Termed ‘Marge’ after his girlfriend, Bong hovered this Lockheed P-38 Lightning in fight and it turn out to be America’s highest-scoring ace with 40 airborne conquests for shooting down Japanese airplanes. He was conferred the Medal of Honor by General Douglas MacArthur.


The mission to the place of smash will be embarked on by Pacific Wrecks, which is a U.S.-based non-profit devoted toward recording war ruins, in the best interests of the Bong Center.


Public along with the media have been asked to be present during the Friday 9:00 a.m. flag-flying formality by American Legion Post #435 titled in admiration of Bong. Briana Fiandt, the Museum Curator of Collections, Justin Taylan, Pacific Wrecks Director along with Bong family memberships will be present for meetings till 5:00 p.m.
