At Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Earth Day transcends mere calendrical significance; it embodies our unwavering dedication to sustainability. Extending far beyond a single day, DFW is actively fostering dialogues within our community on crucial matters such as air quality, water preservation, and the airport’s strides towards becoming a better steward of our planet. Whether it’s travelers passing through, local residents of North Texas, or environmental enthusiasts, DFW warmly invites everyone to participate in our mission to forge a more sustainable world.

In addition to its bold commitment to achieving net-zero emissions, DFW proudly stands as the inaugural recipient of a Global Climate Action award from the United Nations. Nearly a decade ago, DFW became the first airport in North America to attain carbon-neutral status, and it remains the first airport globally to achieve Level 4+ ‘Transition’ certification in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program. These milestones aren’t merely accolades but rather integral steps in a comprehensive strategy aimed at mitigating the airport’s climate impact proactively.

DFW has diligently formulated a strategic roadmap over the past few years to fulfill these objectives. From transitioning to procuring 100% renewable energy to embracing cutting-edge natural gas and electric fleet alternatives, DFW is well on track to meet its environmental targets. The forthcoming electric Central Utility Plant (eCUP), slated to open next year, will be pivotal in this endeavor. Upon completion, the eCUP will bolster sustainable growth, curtail greenhouse gas emissions, enhance local air quality by reducing ozone precursor emissions, and slash water usage by nearly 30% compared to current systems.

Curious about how you can engage and learn more this Earth Day and beyond? DFW offers a wealth of resources catering to educators of all stripes, including teachers, parents, and knowledge seekers alike. Explore DFW’s Earth Day page for guidance on crafting STEM lessons covering vital topics like composting, geology, water conservation, biodiversity, and more. You can also delve into the airport’s sustainability page for further insights into DFW’s journey towards achieving net-zero emissions.
