In 2023, Swedavia’s ten airports witnessed a remarkable display of generosity from passengers, staff, and collaborators, who collectively contributed over SEK 2.8 million to support the Swedish Red Cross. This marked a notable increase of SEK 1.1 million compared to the previous year. Since establishing their partnership in 2012, Swedavia and the Red Cross have joined forces in philanthropy, raising an impressive total of SEK 23 million to aid the organization’s humanitarian missions. The culmination of this ongoing commitment was celebrated at Stockholm Arlanda Airport on April 18th, where Fredrik Jaresved, Swedavia’s Director of Strategic Initiatives and Innovation, presented the annual fundraising check to the Swedish Red Cross.

“In a troubled world, marked by war, conflict and ongoing economic challenges, it is more important than ever that we help each other do what we can to create a better world. Swedavia is therefore proud of our long-standing partnership with the Swedish Red Cross, which allows our passengers and employees to easily make donations that make a difference in people’s everyday lives. On behalf of Swedavia, I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to everyone who contributed to last year’s fundraising effort at our ten airports. It is a proud and worthwhile tradition that continues to live on,” says Fredrik Jaresved, director of strategic initiatives and innovation at Swedavia.

Throughout 2023, both passengers and employees across Swedavia’s airports demonstrated their generosity by contributing over SEK 2.8 million to aid the Swedish Red Cross’s relief endeavors, marking a notable increase of approximately SEK 1.1 million from the previous year. Donations encompassed monetary contributions as well as goods retrieved from lost and found. At numerous terminals within Swedavia’s network of ten airports, individuals had the opportunity to donate cash through designated Red Cross donation boxes. These collection points accept both Swedish and foreign currency, with the entirety of the funds directly supporting the Swedish Red Cross’s vital initiatives.

“It is very gratifying to see that so many of Swedavia’s passengers and employees are choosing to support their fellow human beings. This support is so important for our continued effort to meet the urgent and long-term needs of people affected by crisis around the world, to strengthen Sweden’s preparedness for future challenges and ensure that more people in vulnerable situations will have access to food, medicine and shelter”, says Patrik Nygren-Bonnier, head of communications and fundraising at the Swedish Red Cross.

Since 2012, Swedavia has forged a meaningful partnership with the Swedish Red Cross, collectively raising over SEK 23 million via Swedavia’s network of ten airports. Beyond gathering monetary donations from passengers and staff, Swedavia contributes unclaimed lost and found items after a three-month period, which are then sold in second-hand shops operated by the Swedish Red Cross. Furthermore, the Red Cross conducts campaign activities and communication initiatives at designated areas within Swedavia’s airports, and provides crisis training and support when necessary.

In 2023, the Swedish Red Cross directed its aid and relief efforts primarily towards regions affected by conflict and natural disasters. This included providing expert assistance to the Ukrainian Red Cross in water and sanitation disaster relief efforts amid the conflict in Ukraine. In earthquake-stricken areas, support was channeled into funding, deploying expert delegates, and bolstering personnel presence, notably in Syria. For the Israel-Palestine conflict, the Swedish Red Cross extended assistance to sister associations in both regions to address urgent needs. Additionally, ongoing efforts were dedicated to combating cholera and food shortages in Africa, and providing refugee aid in the Mediterranean through the Ocean Viking ship.
