SWISS may cancel and reschedule flights owing to strike action

Friday, June 30, 2023

Various personnel groups at Geneva Airport have announced strike action for Friday 30 June between 06:00 and 10:00. The strike action planned will extend to the airport’s Apron Control personnel, i.e. the air traffic controllers responsible for managing and monitoring aircraft taxiing on the ground. This means that no aircraft will be able to taxi to the runway for departure or to the gate after landing, so no takeoffs or landings will be possible in the period concerned. Geneva Airport will thus be closed during the strike period – for SWISS flights, too.

SWISS has convened a task force in response to these developments which is now taking every possible action to minimize their impact on SWISS travellers. Despite these efforts, however, SWISS will be forced to cancel some of its flights and delay other flights’ Geneva arrivals or departures.

Some 2,000 SWISS customers affected
The strike action planned will affect all of SWISS’s Friday morning Geneva departures. Flights scheduled to arrive at the airport during the strike period will have to be delayed and rescheduled. The SWISS strike task force is currently working flat out to analyze the precise ramifications. We expect that 13 flights will be cancelled, another eleven will have to be delayed and a total of around 2,000 passengers will be affected. Further details will be communicated on this as soon as they are available.

SWISS has immediately begun to proactively notify the customers concerned of their flight’s cancellation or delay and seek adequate solutions for their travel needs. SWISS fully appreciates the dissatisfaction of the customers concerned, and is doing everything in its power to offer them suitable alternative arrangements. We strive to serve our customers as a reliable and punctual travel partner, and we deeply regret that, as a result of this strike action, we are unable to achieve this ambition. Strikes have posed particular challenges to SWISS and its personnel this year: never before has our company had to cancel so many flights in various European countries as a result of strike action.

SWISS customers affected by this Geneva strike action who provided their phone number or email address when making their flight booking will be proactively contacted and rebooked free of charge if desired. Customers affected who have booked their SWISS flight via a(n online) travel agency are asked to contact the agency.
