Starting from January 1, 2025, Taiwan Tourism Administration will implement a special birthday-themed promotion, where 1,000 people will be given NT$1,200 each month to stay in hotels during their birthday month. This is to encourage domestic travel for special occasions and promote local tourism, giving incentives for citizens to go around Taiwan’s different destinations.
To promote travel on birthdays, Taiwan will launch a new cash reward program starting January 1, 2025. Each month, 1,000 lucky participants will be selected in a draw to receive NT$1,200 (approximately US$40) to spend on accommodation during their birthday month. This incentive is designed to encourage Taiwanese citizens to celebrate locally, boosting domestic tourism and helping support the local hospitality sector.

In addition to birthday rewards, the government will roll out a special promotion for weekdays starting in April 2025. The Sunday to Thursday initiative offers hotel vouchers worth NT$800 for the first night and NT$1,200 for the second. This incentive aims to boost mid-week travel, helping Taiwanese residents take advantage of less crowded periods while also benefiting hotels and other tourism services during typically slower times. By offering incentives for stays during weekdays, the government hopes to distribute tourism traffic more evenly throughout the week, preventing congestion during weekends and promoting year-round travel.
Further proposals presented to the Legislative Yuan include programs to encourage group travel, particularly for company employees. The government is aiming to facilitate team-building trips and incentive tours, positioning Taiwan as a destination for corporate travel. Additionally, there will be a focus on promoting overnight stays at hotels near amusement parks. The initiative is designed to extend the visit experience for tourists, making it more attractive for families and groups to stay longer and enjoy more of Taiwan’s leisure and entertainment offerings.

Transportation Minister Chen Shih-kai has urged lawmakers to approve a NT$2.3 billion budget by March 2025 to ensure the timely launch of the promotional campaigns. These measures are part of a broader effort to revitalize Taiwan’s domestic tourism industry following the disruptions caused by the pandemic. However, DPP Legislator Lee Kun-tse raised concerns about the limited impact of the birthday incentive, noting that only 12,000 people per year would benefit from the current budget allocation. He suggested that the minister consider increasing the budget to allow more citizens to take advantage of the birthday reward, thereby maximizing the program’s effectiveness in stimulating local tourism.
These efforts are likely to impact Taiwan’s tourism industry in the longer term. With these incentives for domestic travel, the government hopes to establish a more sustainable tourism market that is not fully dependent on foreign visitors. As tourism trends change, such programs will continue to be instrumental in promoting more regional travel, ensuring economic progress in areas distant from popular tourist destinations, and assisting smaller and medium-scale enterprises within the tourism business to prosper.

In this light, the success of these travel incentives is likely to pave the way for similar plans in the coming years, with Taiwan continuing to revive its tourism sector and foster sustainable, all-season travel opportunities. Concentrating on local participation, this could lead to higher spending on accommodations, local experiences, and cultural tourism, eventually diversifying the tourism economy.
