In a bid to stream health tourism sector and make it more welcoming to patients from other countries, the Tamil Nadu government will convene a health tourism conclave in Chennai on April 29 and 30.

To lure domestic tourists, it would also organise a cultural and handicraft festival named Chennai Thiruvizha at Island Grounds which will commence on April 28.

According to Tourism Minister K Ramachandran, the health conclave would be hosted at ITC Grand Chola in collaboration with FICCI. It will bring together hospitals, physicians, insurance companies, and tourists from roughly 20 countries, including the Maldives, Bangladesh, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and a few others where people often visit for treatment.

It will be the first time that a state government organises a conclave like this, which will provide a B2B platform for hospitals and other players interested in health tourism, he noted.

The tourism department has identified hospitals as well as the nations from which the majority of patients visit, allowing patients to approach hospitals without being abused by intermediaries.

The details of 32 hospitals have been published to the national government’s Heal in India website, and additional institutions will be added in the following days. According to Tourism Secretary B Chandra Mohan, the site would also provide patients with credible information on hospitals, specialties, and costs.

According to the minister, the plan was for the government to direct people to the appropriate facilities in order to boost health tourism.

“It is estimated that health tourism brings in $18 crore,” said Ramachandran.

He stated that the Chennai Thiruvizha, which will be launched on Friday by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Udayanidhi Stalin, will be open till May 15.

The fair’s major goal will be to showcase handicrafts, textiles, and traditional food from various sections of the nation. Ten foreign nations will also have booths, with 83 reserved for other states.

“The fair will have 311 stalls because of the demand from the fraternity,” he said.

“The idea came about from the Surajkund fair in Faridabad where craftsmen congregate to display and sell their wares. We wanted to create something similar in south India,” said Chandra Mohan.

The fair is aimed at boosting domestic tourism. The recently concluded trade fair attracted 15 lakh visitors.
