Tenth saudi pediatric neurology society conference in riyadh highlights technological advances and ai in healthcare

The 10th Saudi Pediatric Neurology Society (SPNS) conference, held in Riyadh, has gathered 600 pediatric neurology experts from around the globe to discuss key advancements in the field. This year’s event, themed “A Decade of Excellence,” marks a significant milestone in the society’s efforts to improve pediatric healthcare, particularly in the realm of neurology, and aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 to enhance innovation in medical research and practices.

The conference brought together leading specialists to exchange knowledge and collaborate on research initiatives aimed at improving clinical care for children with neurological disorders. The event underscored the growing importance of technological advancements, including artificial intelligence (AI), in supporting pediatric neurology services, especially in diagnosing and treating conditions such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Growing Demand for Pediatric Neurology Services

According to Dr. Mohammed Al-Omari, Chairman of the Congress and Pediatric Neurology Consultant at King Fahad University Hospital, neurological disorders affect an estimated 10–15% of children in the region. With advancements in neonatal care and improved diagnostic tools, the demand for pediatric neurology services is rising rapidly. Conditions like epilepsy, neuromuscular diseases, and metabolic disorders are some of the most common neurological issues faced by children in the region.

The SPNS has made significant strides in raising awareness about these conditions, offering educational campaigns and developing resources for both healthcare providers and families. The society also runs training programs for pediatricians and neurologists to improve early diagnosis and timely referrals, ensuring that children receive the best possible care.

Technology and Artificial Intelligence Leading the Way

A major focus of this year’s conference was the integration of technology and AI in pediatric neurology. AI-assisted tools are now being used to enhance the interpretation of electroencephalograms (EEGs), analyze neuroimaging, and even detect neurological disorders at earlier stages. The use of telemedicine has also been expanding, particularly in remote regions, enabling access to specialized care that may have previously been unavailable. In Saudi Arabia, these technologies are being integrated into the national digital health platforms, facilitating better diagnosis and follow-up care.

Dr. Al-Omari emphasized the significant role that AI and technology are playing in improving healthcare outcomes. “AI is becoming central to pediatric neurology, helping clinicians make faster and more accurate diagnoses, improving patient outcomes,” he said.

Key Topics and Focus Areas

The conference also tackled several important topics in pediatric neurology, including advancements in the treatment of neurological conditions like Spinocerebellar Ataxias, new approaches to treating metabolic epilepsy, and breakthroughs in the management of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Experts discussed the latest research on pediatric central nervous system infections, diagnostic challenges, and the role of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (FDA) in regulating drugs for pediatric neurological conditions.

The event highlighted the importance of collaboration in advancing clinical practices, with experts discussing the latest developments in the treatment of complex conditions such as stroke in children and stroke-like episodes in neuro-metabolic diseases. Additionally, the conference explored diagnostic dilemmas in pediatric neurology, such as distinguishing between neuroinflammatory and infectious conditions.

Celebrating a Decade of Excellence

Professor Fahad Bashiri, President of the Saudi Pediatric Neurology Society and Professor of Pediatric Neurology at King Saud University, spoke about the achievements of the society over the past decade. He celebrated the success of the Saudi Pediatric Neurology Congress in advancing medical education, community awareness, and pediatric neurology research. “The title of this year’s conference, ‘A Decade of Excellence,’ reflects our continued commitment to excellence in pediatric healthcare,” he said.

The conference featured prominent speakers from across the globe, including Prof. Fahad Bashiri, Dr. Mohammed Al-Omari, and Dr. Khalid Hundallah, Vice President of the Saudi Pediatric Neurology Society. The event provided a valuable platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange, with the goal of improving healthcare delivery and advancing the science of pediatric neurology.

Looking Ahead

The 10th SPNS conference represents a key moment in Saudi Arabia’s medical community, as the nation strengthens its position as a regional leader in healthcare innovation and research. With the integration of cutting-edge technology and AI, as well as ongoing efforts to raise awareness and improve early diagnosis, the future of pediatric neurology in Saudi Arabia looks brighter than ever.
