Thailand Approves Key Tourism and Infrastructure Projects in Phuket to Boost their Local Livelihoods, Attract Visitors and Enhance Sustainability Growth

Published on November 22, 2025

The Thai government has approved four key projects in Phuket to build up the island’s tourism sector, fix its infrastructure, and boost the people’s standard of living. These plans have just been confirmed during a site visit on November 21, 2025, by Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office Aree Krainara, who is working to accelerate these projects. These are to be funded through central government reserves and agency budgets and are a part of the government’s continuing efforts toward high-priority regional development. Phuket boasts beaches, resorts, and lively culture, making the island one of the most frequented places in Thailand. These new projects thus fit into the demand for tourism growth, while on the other hand meeting the local economic needs with a view towards sustainability.

Enhancing Infrastructure and Community Engagement

The approved projects focus on improving tourism infrastructure, including the enhancement of Phuket International Airport and the development of transport networks and public services. Governor Nirat Phongsitthaworn briefed the delegation on the island’s surging high-season tourist arrivals, particularly from international flights, and highlighted the challenges posed by increasing visitor numbers.

The projects will also align with Phuket’s Smart City goals, promoting technological innovation, sustainability, and community wellbeing. The government’s efforts aim to not only develop the island’s tourism infrastructure but also enhance the quality of life for local residents by integrating eco-friendly initiatives and promoting inclusive growth in the tourism sector.

Key Projects for Phuket’s Tourism and Economic Future

The total budget for these initiatives amounts to 21.7 million baht, covering four key projects:

  1. Highway 3033 Upgrade (9.9 million baht): This infrastructure improvement aims to ease traffic congestion and improve road safety in Thalang, a district that is central to tourism on the island. By addressing transportation issues, the project will make the region more accessible to both tourists and local residents, contributing to tourism growth and improving daily life for locals.
  2. Phuket Safe Destination Campaign (1.8 million baht): This initiative will promote safety standards and boost tourist confidence through campaigns led by the Tourism and Sports Office. The goal is to make Phuket a safe destination for international travelers, enhancing its image and making it an attractive choice for visitors.
  3. OTOP Phuket on Tour: 2 The Towns (5 million baht): This project will support local businesses by creating new marketing channels for Phuket’s cultural products, including crafts and food items. By integrating local communities into the tourism sector, the project aims to create new revenue streams for residents while attracting cultural tourists to the island.
  4. Phuket Fabric Local to Global Creative Arts Project (5 million baht): This initiative will promote Phuket’s traditional textiles and elevate their market reach both locally and globally. By showcasing local craftsmanship, the project not only supports the island’s creative economy but also strengthens Phuket’s cultural identity, attracting tourists interested in authentic and unique travel experiences.

Tourism Impact: Strengthening Phuket’s Role in Thailand’s Tourism Economy

The impact of these projects will be felt across both local communities and the tourism sector. Phuket has long been a key driver of Thailand’s tourism economy, and these initiatives aim to further enhance its appeal to global visitors while ensuring that local residents benefit from the island’s tourism growth.

The improvements to transportation and public services will help reduce congestion and enhance the visitor experience, particularly for those arriving during the busy high seasons. The OTOP Phuket on Tour and Phuket Fabric Project will not only boost tourism but also provide important economic opportunities for local artisans and businesses, fostering a more sustainable and inclusive tourism model.

Additionally, the Phuket Safe Destination campaign will address safety concerns, a key issue for tourists when choosing a destination. Promoting safe travel conditions will help maintain Phuket’s reputation as a top-tier tourist destination while encouraging longer stays and repeat visits, which are crucial for long-term tourism growth.

Addressing the Shift Toward Sustainable and Community-Centered Tourism

The growing trend in global tourism is moving toward sustainable and community-centered models, where both tourists and locals can benefit from the industry’s growth. The initiatives launched in Phuket reflect this shift, with a focus on sustainability, local empowerment, and environmental responsibility.

Phuket’s efforts to develop as a Smart City are in line with the broader global movement for sustainable tourism, which emphasizes environmental consciousness, resource management, and respect for local cultures. By prioritizing eco-friendly infrastructure and inclusive tourism development, Phuket is positioning itself as a leader in responsible tourism in Southeast Asia.

Strengthening Phuket’s Competitiveness in the Global Tourism Market

As international travel continues to rebound post-pandemic, Phuket is facing increasing competition from other Southeast Asian destinations, as well as emerging markets offering affordable travel experiences. By investing in tourism infrastructure, local culture, and community wellbeing, these new projects ensure that Phuket remains competitive in the global tourism market.

The international demand for unique experiences, cultural heritage, and eco-friendly tourism options is on the rise, and Phuket’s strategic investments in these areas will help it stay ahead of trends. The Napa Valley model of integrating nature and local experiences into tourism offerings can serve as a model for Phuket, offering visitors a deeper and more meaningful connection to the island’s natural beauty and culture.

A Bright Future for Phuket’s Tourism and Local Communities

The new tourism and infrastructure projects in Phuket are indicative of the island’s commitment to its long-term growth and sustainability. With improved transportation, local craftsmanship, and tourist safety, Phuket is not only strengthening its position as a leading tourism destination but also ensuring that the benefits of tourism trickle down to its residents.

These will go a long way in ensuring that Phuket remains a prime destination in Thailand, with an improved quality of life both for visitors and the people residing here. With sustainable tourism best practices, community involvement, and respect for its culture, the island’s future looks great, and benefits derived from an improved tourism economy go hand in hand with preserving its heritage for the people of the future. With tourism continuing to rise, the future is indeed bright for Phuket, with these strategic investments laying the groundwork for a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable tourism industry in Thailand.
