Thailand’s outbound travel market is set to soar as record numbers of Thai tourists are expected to head to China, Japan, and Europe, driven by the strengthening baht and relaxed visa policies. The strong baht has significantly boosted spending power, making international travel more accessible, while new and attractive travel options abroad offer memorable experiences for Thai travellers. With China, Japan, and Europe emerging as the most popular destinations, the trend reflects a broader desire among Thai tourists to explore diverse international experiences, supported by affordable travel packages and improved air connectivity.

Thailand’s extended New Year holiday has become an increasingly important period for outbound travel operators, with many Thai travellers opting for international trips as a way to relax and “reward themselves” before the new year begins. This surge in travel sentiment is driven by a stronger baht, which enhances purchasing power, and by an expanding variety of appealing travel options abroad that promise fresh, memorable experiences.

In 2026, the most popular destination for Thai travellers during the New Year period is expected to be China, followed by Japan and Europe. The strengthening of the baht has had a significant impact on spending and travel decisions, particularly among higher-income groups who are already planning their international trips. The combination of favorable exchange rates and attractive travel packages is making overseas travel more accessible and desirable.

Outbound travel from Thailand is projected to reach around 11 to 12 million trips in 2026, close to the number of trips taken in 2025. For 2025, Thai travellers are expected to spend an average of 40,000 baht per trip, which translates to a total outbound spending of approximately 440 to 480 billion baht. China is expected to remain the top destination, with an estimated 2 million Thai visitors projected to travel there in 2025.

One of the key factors driving the demand for travel to China is the visa exemption between Thailand and China, which took effect on March 1, 2024. Thai passport holders can now enter China without a visa, staying up to 30 days per entry, and up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This relaxed visa policy has made travel to China even more convenient and appealing, especially for tourists looking for cost-effective options.

Improved air connectivity between Thailand and China has also played a major role in boosting travel. Charter flights, as well as regular services, have increased, making it easier for Thai tourists to travel to China. Thai tour operators have stepped up their marketing efforts, promoting China-bound trips and offering affordable packages that include flights and accommodations. The average cost for a 3-4 night trip to China, including flights, is around 20,000 baht per person, making it an attractive option for Thai travellers. In addition, China’s high-speed rail system makes travelling between cities more convenient, adding to the overall appeal.

As a result, Thai travel to China is expected to exceed 2 million visitors in 2025, breaking all previous records. Among the most popular destinations in China are Chongqing and Chengdu. Chongqing has become the most visited city by Thai travellers, thanks to its vibrant tourism activities and striking landmarks, many of which have gained popularity on social media. Chengdu, famous for its Siguniang Mountain, attracts many visitors, particularly those who are drawn to its stunning peaks, snowy landscapes, and glaciers.

Japan, meanwhile, continues to be a favourite destination for Thai tourists, with the number of Thai visitors expected to exceed 1 million in 2025. The recent depreciation of the yen has contributed to this surge, as the exchange rate has fallen below 20 baht per 100 yen for the first time in 33 years. The yen’s decline makes Japan an even more attractive destination for Thai travellers, as it offers more value for money.

A report from the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) revealed that over 1.06 million Thai visitors travelled to Japan between January and November 2025, marking a 5.7% increase compared to the previous year. This figure places Thailand as the sixth-largest inbound market for Japan, following China, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, and Hong Kong. The weakening yen has undoubtedly played a significant role in encouraging more Thai visitors to explore Japan, where the cost of travel is now more affordable.

Thailand’s outbound travel market continues to grow, driven by favourable economic factors such as the stronger baht and relaxed visa policies. In addition to China and Japan, other destinations in Europe are also gaining popularity among Thai travellers. With a growing range of affordable travel options and improved connectivity, international travel is becoming more accessible to a wider segment of the population.

Thailand’s outbound travel market is set to soar as record numbers of Thai tourists head to China, Japan, and Europe, driven by a stronger baht and attractive travel options. The baht’s boost in purchasing power, combined with relaxed visa policies, makes international travel more appealing and accessible.

As we look to 2026, it is clear that Thailand’s outbound travel market will continue to flourish, with China, Japan, and Europe remaining top destinations. With more affordable packages, improved travel services, and a range of new experiences to explore, Thai travellers are expected to spend more on their international trips, contributing significantly to the country’s outbound tourism market. This trend signals a bright future for the global travel industry as Thai tourists continue to explore the world beyond their borders.
