Thailand’s commitment to sustainable tourism has been highlighted once again as six Thai destinations were showcased in the 2024 Green Destinations Top 100 Stories. This prestigious acknowledgment was announced during a virtual event, complemented by a celebratory ceremony at the Green Destinations 2024 Global Conference in Chile from October 15-17.
The Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) submitted these stories, earning recognition across several categories. Chiang Khan and Songkhla City were honored in the Thriving Communities category, U Thong Ancient City was noted for its Destination Management, and Wiang Phu Phiang Chae Haeng was celebrated for its emphasis on Culture and Tradition.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said “TAT congratulates DASTA, Hua Hin Municipality and UThai Thani Town Municipality as well as the people of all six destinations for their initiatives and efforts in sustainable tourism practices. These recognitions reflect TAT’s vision to position Thailand as a sustainable, experience-based tourism destination in line with our ‘Amazing Thailand: Your Stories Never End’ communication concept.”
Additionally, Hua Hin, represented by the city’s Municipality, and Uthai Thani Old Town, showcased by the town’s municipality, received accolades in the Environment and Climate, and Culture and Tradition categories, respectively. These entries join a series of ten previous submissions from Thailand that gained recognition between 2020 and 2023. Notably, Huai Pu Keng and Ko Mak were recipients of the Green Destinations Story Awards at ITB Berlin 2023 for their community-based tourism and low-carbon efforts, respectively.
Highlighting its leadership in sustainable tourism, Chiang Khan also earned the distinction of being the first ASEAN destination to receive the Silver designation at the Green Destinations Award during ITB Berlin 2024. This recognition underscores the growing significance of sustainable practices within the global tourism sector, reflecting Thailand’s active role in promoting environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.
