In a groundbreaking development, the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi has confirmed the launch of e-visa facilities for Indian passport holders, effective from January 1, 2025. The embassy further clarified that, until further notice, Indian nationals holding regular passports will continue to benefit from a 60-day visa exemption for tourism and short-term business visits. However, those opting for the e-visa route will need to pay a non-refundable visa fee. The specific payment methods available will be shared by the embassy and its consulates, which will guide applicants on offline payment procedures.
Visa processing through the e-visa system is expected to take up to 14 days from the time the visa fee is received. Applicants will be required to submit their applications through the official Thai e-visa portal. The embassy also provided key information about the transition timeline to the new system, ensuring a smooth shift for those planning their travel to Thailand.
As per the embassy’s directive, applications for ordinary passports, submitted through processing agencies, will be accepted only until December 16, 2024. On the other hand, diplomatic and official passport holders have until December 24, 2024, to submit their applications directly to the embassy or consulate-general. These deadlines are designed to ensure that all travelers adhere to the new e-visa system by the start of 2025.

In 2019 alone, over 2 million Indian tourists visited Thailand, marking a sharp rise in numbers from previous years. This growth trend has only accelerated in the wake of the global pandemic, with tourism surging as the country rebounds and recovers. Thailand’s tourism economy has greatly benefited from this influx, underscoring the nation’s enduring popularity as a tourist hotspot.
The embassy also reminded travelers that Indian nationals can still obtain a visa on arrival, offering a convenient option for last-minute trips to Thailand. With the introduction of the e-visa system, the country aims to further enhance its accessibility and convenience, reaffirming its status as one of the most attractive travel destinations for Indian tourists.
In conclusion, the new e-visa system is expected to streamline the process of visiting Thailand, making it more efficient and accessible for Indian nationals. As Thailand continues to be a favored destination for leisure, business, and special events, this new system will likely make the travel experience even more seamless, solidifying Thailand’s position as a leading destination for Indian tourists in the coming years.
