Thailand, Vietnam, China and Laos Fuel Record-Breaking Tourism Growth in Cambodia – All You Need to Know

Published on August 2, 2025

In 2025, tourism growth in Cambodia has experienced a remarkable surge, particularly from neighboring countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, China and Laos. This influx of visitors underscores Cambodia’s growing prominence as a leading destination in Southeast Asia, attracting tourists seeking to explore the Kingdom’s rich history, cultural landmarks and natural beauty. Driven by enhanced connectivity, government initiatives and the relaxation of travel restrictions, Cambodia is poised to surpass its tourism targets and continue its upward trend throughout the year.

Chinese Tourists Lead the Surge

Among the many countries contributing to the surge in tourist arrivals, China stands out with a staggering increase of 50.7% in the first half of 2025. This significant rise can be attributed to the easing of travel restrictions, stronger bilateral relations and the successful marketing efforts by the Cambodian tourism sector. The number of Chinese tourists now accounts for approximately 17.4% of Cambodia’s total international visitors. As a result, China has become the third-largest source of foreign tourists to Cambodia, further cementing the Kingdom’s status as a preferred destination for Chinese travelers. Government initiatives such as the “Year of China-Cambodia Tourism,” launched during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit in April 2025, have further propelled this growth, strengthening cultural and tourism exchanges between the two nations

Vietnam Continues Strong Growth

Vietnam, with its close proximity and historical ties to Cambodia, remains a crucial source of tourism. In 2025, the first five months saw 514,511 Vietnamese visitors, accounting for 17.4% of the Kingdom’s total arrivals. The ease of travel, cultural similarities, and shared interests in history and heritage continue to draw large numbers of Vietnamese tourists to Cambodia. The major cities of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, home to iconic attractions such as Angkor Wat, remain particularly popular among Vietnamese visitors. The continued growth of this market further underscores Cambodia’s strong position within Southeast Asia’s tourism landscape

Thailand has consistently been the top source of international tourists for Cambodia. In the first five months of 2025, Thai visitors made up 29.0% of the total international arrivals. The close geographical proximity, robust travel infrastructure, and cultural exchanges between the two countries have facilitated a steady flow of Thai tourists. Cambodia’s rich history, particularly the grandeur of the Angkor temples, draws significant interest from Thai visitors, who seek to explore the Kingdom’s cultural heritage. As one of Cambodia’s largest tourism markets, Thailand’s contribution remains vital to the country’s tourism success

Laos Sees Steady Increase in Visitors

Laos, Cambodia’s neighboring country to the north, has also seen a steady rise in tourism, contributing significantly to the overall surge in arrivals. Laotian visitors, attracted by shared cultural heritage and close proximity, continue to make up a significant portion of Cambodia’s international tourist numbers. The number of visitors from Laos has been steadily increasing, with many travelers drawn to Cambodia’s historical landmarks and natural attractions. With improved transportation links and ongoing cultural exchanges, Laos is expected to remain an important market for Cambodia in the coming years

Government Initiatives Fueling Tourism Growth

The Cambodian government has played a crucial role in driving the country’s tourism growth. Strategic initiatives, including the promotion of the “Year of China-Cambodia Tourism” and improvements to key infrastructure, have been vital in attracting international visitors. Efforts to enhance air connectivity, such as the expansion of Siem Reap International Airport, have made travel to Cambodia more accessible. Additionally, targeted marketing campaigns aimed at promoting Cambodia’s unique cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and historical sites have resonated with tourists from neighboring countries
