The Adi Varaha Idol to be displayed at CSMVS exhibition 2023

The International Exhibition on Ancient Sculptures – Egypt, Assyria, Greece, Rome and India is all geared up to be carried outon 1st December at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya in Mumbai where the much-respected archaeological sculptures from various corners of the globe will be displayed.


The Adi Varaha Idol from the District Archaeological Museum, Vidisha will turn intoas the only sculpture from Madhya Pradesh to be showcased at this major event. Iin red sandstone, the monument is carved out with the carvings of several Gods and Goddesses and saints. As per the olden mythologies like Mahabharata and Bhagwat-Puran, Lord Vishnu embodied as Varaha and saved the underwater earth Goddess. The statue owns a very high value in terms of artistic worth in iconographic studies and acts as one of the perfect instances of Adi Varaha.


Mr. Sheo Shekhar Shukla, the Principal Secretary Department of Tourism and Culture, Madhya Pradesh, said that this central state houses uncountable archaeological phenomena and is also the home of Sanchi, Bhimbetka and Khajuraho Group of Monuments, the 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Over the centuries, the state has produced the remains of great dynasties and the initial representation of sculptural art is dated around 2nd Century BC.


Madhya Pradesh Directorate of Archaeology has always got attention for the praiseworthy works done in terms of Archaeology. The primary purpose of this Directorate is to conduct village to village investigation, diggings, gathering, prevention, compiling, publication and protection of the cultural heritage spread in MP.
