Grave haze took over the air in Delhi and created dire situations for airlines. For the third day in a row, a dense mist hovered over the nation’s capital, limiting visibility to almost nil. As a result, the Delhi airport cautioned travellers pertaining to the disruptions to flights.

It was due to the zero metre visibility that the Indian Meteorological Department comprehended concerning CAT-IIIB procedures. These procedures were consequently triggered at Delhi airport between 5.30 and 9.30 am. The runway visibility was almost close to turning zero, which was about 125 to 175 with concerning the range at each of the four runways. But starting around 10 am, the weather unexpectedly grew better.

According to airport officials, whenever visibility fell below 800 metres, the airport implemented low visibility protocols targeted at making landings easier. In the event of visibility exceeding 550 metres, CAT-I procedures—the most basic set of safety measures—are triggered. When visibility is between 275 and 550 metres, pilots who are in compliance with CAT-II may land. Pilots operating CAT-III A and B aircraft, however, are permitted to land in situations where visibility is less than 275 metres, even as low as 50 metres.

The dire impediment of the airlines at the Delhi airport made the passengers go haywire. The situational discomfort of the delayed flights was highly unanticipated.

Passengers using the Delhi airport are advised that although landings and takeoffs are still occurring, there may be inconveniences for non-CAT III-compliant aircraft. The CAT III instrument is a fog-fighting landing system that comes on in low visibility.

The Indian Meteorological Department added that there were very dense fog-clad situations in some of the remote regions apart from Delhi. Those were Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, East Uttar Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha; moderate fog in some areas of West Uttar Pradesh; and low haze in some areas of Chandigarh, Bihar, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Tripura.

The CEO of Delhi International Airport Limited told the media that the primary focus was on improving the passenger experience. Along with ensuring the higher standard facilities for security and safety during such haze-like situations. Despite the unique challenges the fog season presents to the airports, DIAL stands were prepared to provide the clients with a secure and enjoyable journey. To reduce delays and provide travellers with up-to-date information, they even allocated resources towards infrastructure, technology, and employee training.
