During the SiGMA South Asia panel titled Tourism & Casino as Growth Twin-Engines, experts shared insights on the growing importance of integrated resorts, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. These massive, all-encompassing resorts are designed to offer everything from luxury accommodations and shopping to modern gaming and dining experiences. The panelists, including Dr. Dharshana Weerakoon, Group COO of ADN Holdings, and Artur Manasaryan, Deputy Head of B2B at BetConstruct, explored how Sri Lanka could leverage this trend to boost its tourism appeal.
Moderator Jenny Ortiz-Bolivar, an Asia Lead Senior Journalist at SiGMA Group, highlighted the evolution of tourism and gaming sectors in Asia, noting that integrated resorts are no longer just a niche market but a driving force in the tourism industry. “Integrated resorts are big in this part of the world,” she said, setting the stage for a discussion about the future intersection between tourism and casino developments in Sri Lanka.

Shifting Consumer Expectations and the Digital Influence
Dr. Weerakoon pointed out the shifting expectations of global tourists, particularly when it comes to how destinations are marketed and perceived. “Guests now rely heavily on TripAdvisor, social media, and the overall digital footprint of a destination,” he said, emphasizing the importance of a resort’s digital presence. With modern travelers increasingly making decisions based on online reviews, social media presence, and seamless booking experiences, Sri Lanka’s tourism sector needs to evolve to meet these new demands.

For the new wave of tourists, convenience has become essential. Proximity to airports, ease of access, reliable Wi-Fi, and quick check-in procedures all play a crucial role in shaping the perception of a destination. This emphasis on convenience is expected to be a game-changer for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, particularly as the island integrates both traditional tourism and modern gaming offerings into a unified experience.
The Future of Land-Based and Digital Gaming Integration
As global tourism moves further into the digital age, Sri Lanka’s integrated resorts must also evolve to meet the needs of digital-first consumers. The panel discussed how land-based operators can adapt in a world where digital platforms play a central role. Artur Manasaryan emphasized, “It’s impossible to stay offline in this century… it’s not even the future, it’s now.” The use of digital tools to enhance guest experiences—such as through personalized online gaming, loyalty programs, and digital marketing—is expected to play a key role in shaping the future of Sri Lanka’s tourism offerings.
Brady Hiscox, Managing Director of Cosanta Technology Group, pointed out the value of online data in improving the land-based experience. “Online operators have been capturing so much customer data—likes, dislikes, favorite games. When you connect that with land-based venues, you can create personalized experiences,” he explained. The integration of digital tools with land-based resorts will not only enhance the guest experience but also attract tech-savvy tourists looking for tailored, high-quality service.
Balancing Online and Land-Based Gaming Models
As the global gaming market evolves, a hybrid model combining both online and land-based gaming has gained momentum. Artur noted that markets such as Latin America, Africa, and Europe are already seeing this convergence, where online and land-based operators complement rather than compete with each other. He highlighted the seamless experiences players now expect, such as online gaming options that connect them with physical resorts.
Brady warned against the danger of “paralysis by analysis,” encouraging operators to embrace digital transformation while focusing on the key information that drives customer satisfaction. “You need curated information. Operators love paperwork, but they need to embrace digital transformation,” he added, reinforcing the need for the tourism and gaming sectors to move forward with innovation.
Technology, Security, and Logistics in Integrated Resorts
One of the key discussions centered around the technological gaps in integrated resort planning, especially when it comes to logistics and security. Brady highlighted the overlooked importance of logistics technology, stressing that smooth operations are critical for a resort’s success. “Getting things stuck in customs is a nightmare without proper systems,” he said, pointing out that resort operators must focus on technological solutions to streamline operations.
In addition to logistics, security technology also plays a crucial role in creating a safe and comfortable environment for guests. Dr. Weerakoon emphasized that guest trust is essential in this industry, particularly when visitors are engaging in both tourism and gaming activities. “The reliability of a resort, its comfort, and safety are key to ensuring repeat business,” he said.
Regulation and Trust in the Gaming Industry
Regulation was another key topic of discussion. Both Artur and Brady highlighted the importance of robust regulation in building trust with customers and preventing the rise of unregulated markets. Artur reflected on his experience in the UK, noting that there is no stigma around casinos when they are properly regulated. “Regulated operators shine. It gives people the trust they need to feel safe,” he said.
Brady agreed, adding that well-structured regulation ensures transparency, reduces corruption, and encourages investment in the sector. Jenny Ortiz-Bolivar also emphasized the crucial role of regulation in maturing Sri Lanka’s gaming industry, calling it “the key to industry maturation.”
The Future of Sri Lanka’s Tourism and Gaming Synergy
There is great recognition among industry stakeholders on the potential of Sri Lanka to enhance its global competitiveness in the tourism and gaming industry and gain a competitive edge in providing personalized and flexible services geared toward the sector’s particular challenges. When these technologies are implemented along with responsive regulations to build the trust necessary to innovate and manage risk, the outcomes can be transformative. While the leaders in the tourism sector continue to develop a blueprint, the country will certainly be one of the most competitive and diversified tourism destinations in the South Asia region.
