Globally, Thailand is well known for its natural wonders, picturesque destinations, delectable cuisine, and rich culture but unfortunately, only a small number of tourists are quite familiar with vineyards and innovative wineries that have timely been around for more than 30 years.
With the onset of vineyard places like Khao Yai, Hua Hin, Pattaya, Chiang Rai, and the provinces of Loei and Phichit, Thailand has the permanence of oenophiles, which now produce over a million bottles of wine annually.
Moreover, what sets Thailand apart includes wine made from the Muk Mao fruit, also known as Thai Blueberry, from other traditional wine destinations is its unique varieties.
As informed over the period of decades, residents of Piu Phan’s northeastern district in Sakon Nakhon, have foraged and fermented these berries in their pounded papaya salads. However, an astute native, Mr. Khanop Wannawong discovered Mak Mao and spent over 30 years collecting and perfecting this particular fruit in the Wannawong Garden.
The possibility of diversity helps the garden of Mak Maos grow in more than 31 species including Sakhon Nakhon’s own variant, which has earned a GI mark.
Due to high consumption in the market and quality assurance Mak Mao has been dubbed as ‘The Fountain of Youth’.
This unique wine is said to have anthocyanins which are said to be profoundly flavored with a strong aroma and is known to prevent cardiovascular disease, neurological illness, and aging-related bone –loss.
