With four levels of outdoor balcony terraces, the museum provides breathtaking views of the iconic city skyline and a captivating architectural backdrop for its extensive collection of masterpieces by eminent American artists such as Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Jacob Lawrence. Additionally, cutting-edge exhibitions showcase the works of today’s most celebrated contemporary artists.

As the holiday season unfolds, there’s no better vantage point to experience the enchantment of New York City than from the terraces of the Whitney. Immerse yourself in the dazzling holiday lights of Gansevoort Plaza and don’t forget to gaze upward at Nancy Baker Cahill’s monumental augmented reality “creature,” CENTO, drifting gracefully above the terrace on Floor 8. Explore festive activities in the Museum’s holiday guide and discover unique gifts for art enthusiasts at the Whitney Shop, including NYC-inspired prints from artist Anastasia Inciardi’s viral Mini Print Vending Machine, available for just $1 each.

Exciting culinary developments are on the horizon as the Whitney welcomes Frenchette Bakery to its premises this November. As part of the museum’s revamped food and beverage program, Frenchette Bakery, renowned for its TriBeCa location since 2020, will inaugurate its flagship venue, featuring its first-ever cafe in the Museum’s redesigned ground-floor restaurant space. The menu will showcase an array of on-premises baked sweet and savory delights, accompanied by a new commission from artist Rashid Johnson.

The Whitney stands as the custodian of the foremost collection of American art from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, spotlighting the most innovative artists of our time. The current presentation, “The Whitney’s Collection: Selections from 1900 to 1965,” showcases iconic works by luminaries such as Andy Warhol, Lee Krasner, Norman Lewis, and Roy Lichtenstein. A highlight of this multi-year exhibition is the panoramic installation of Alexander Calder’s “Calder’s Circus,” lauded by New York magazine as “one of the most fun, beloved, and radical works of 20th-century American art.”

Among the current and upcoming exhibitions, the blockbuster “Henry Taylor: B Side” runs through January 28, 2024, celebrating an artist known for his distinctive aesthetic, social vision, and experimental spirit. Ruth Asawa takes the spotlight in “Ruth Asawa Through Line,” showcasing her dreamy works on paper until January 15, 2024. Looking ahead, the Whitney Biennial, the museum’s flagship exhibition, returns in spring 2024, presenting a constellation of the most relevant art and ideas of our time. Opening in September 2024, “Edges of Ailey” will be a large-scale museum exhibition reflecting on the life, work, and legacy of visionary artist Alvin Ailey.
