2024: Indians are embarking on travel adventures like never before, as evidenced by the latest data from Thomas Cook (India) Limited, the country’s leading omnichannel travel services company, and its Group Company, SOTC Travel. This surge in travel interest is particularly notable for weekend getaways and short breaks, with the upcoming Holi week presenting a unique opportunity.

During the Holi festivities, travelers are exploring diverse experiences. From spiritual journeys to destinations associated with the life of Lord Krishna, such as Radha Krishna’s Brij Bhoomi and Nandgaon’s ‘Lathmar’ ritual, to indulging in local delicacies like mathura ka peda and thandai, there’s a rich tapestry of experiences awaiting.

Additionally, there’s a significant rise in ‘drivecations,’ with a 25% increase in travelers opting for drivable destinations, extending their stays to 5-7 days. Popular choices include picturesque locations like Naukuchiatal, Coorg, and Hampi.

Adventure enthusiasts are fueling a 30% increase in interest for outdoor activities like biking in the Himalayas, white water rafting in Rishikesh, and camping in Jaisalmer. Moreover, visa-free access is driving a surge in short-haul travel to destinations like Sri Lanka and Thailand, while improved connectivity is boosting interest in places like Baku and Amalty.

With Indians spending 25% more this Holi compared to last year, the travel industry is witnessing a boom. Furthermore, airfares have dropped by 6-10% for domestic routes, encouraging more people to explore destinations within India, which now enjoys a 70% share of travel compared to international destinations.

Mr. Rajeev Kale, President & Country Head – Holidays, MICE, Visa, Thomas Cook (India) Limited said,
“With Holi falling on a Monday and Good Friday in the same week, customers are taking 3 days off to avail a week
long holiday to explore their favourite locales across India. Our trends indicate that customers are maximising this
opportunity to take an extended break – be it a spiritual getaway, an outdoor/adventure trip, self-drives or a tranquil
getaway in the hills/beaches. This year, we are witnessing a significant demand uptick of 5x vs last year and
increased spends of 25%; more so given the longer duration of two weekends. In addition to celebrating Holi, our
segments across Young India, families, and ad-hoc groups of friends are looking to explore destinations within the
country; also shirt haul international options.”
Mr. Daniel D’souza, President & Country Head, SOTC Travel said, “The upcoming Holi week combined with
the subsequent Easter weekend offers strong potential for a week long vacation, and our data indicates surge from
not only from metros and mini-metros, but also our Regional tier 2 and 3 cities. What is noteworthy is that we are
seeing a surge in air-inclusive holidays fuelled by the dip in airfares over the extended week/weekend; drivecations
too are seeing a brisk business.”
