GRACE LA MARGNA ST MORITZ

GRACE LA MARGNA ST MORITZ, a distinguished exemplar of Engadine Art Nouveau architecture, stands as a meticulously revitalized haven for enthusiasts of design and architecture. Nestled in the opulent and cosmopolitan alpine town of St Moritz, Switzerland, this iconic five-star hotel emerged anew in August 2023, following an extensive restoration and expansion initiative led in partnership with the renowned Divercity Architects and French interior designer Carole Topin.

Originally conceived in 1906 by Swiss architect Nicolaus Hartmann, the landmark structure graces the vicinity of St Moritz station, along the UNESCO World Heritage railway line, offering captivating views of glaciers and valleys. GRACE LA MARGNA ST MORITZ seamlessly integrates old-world charm with modern influences, preserving the La Margna Wing’s historic features while introducing the new Grace Wing. The collaborative vision of the design team establishes a captivating dialogue between the two wings, where the façade of the Grace Wing, adorned with beige moleanos limestone, harmonizes with the playful grid of windows on the original structure.

“The landmark is charged with a tremendous architectural and emotional value for the local community of St Moritz,” comments Nikolas Travasaros, Founder of Divercity Architects. “Although deeply rooted in the context of the region, we wanted to offer a different reading and break away from the classic alpine stereotypes. Keeping typical components of alpine resorts, we quickly decided to introduce some catalyst moments to spark an element of surprise and add to the timeless and elegant feel of the hotel. It doesn’t have to be one or the other, it’s a conversation through time and space.”

Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by a sculptural reception desk, a monolithic granite block with a brass countertop, set against a backdrop of exquisite boiserie detailing inspired by the majestic mountain landscape. The communal LIVING ROOM offers panoramic views of Lake St Moritz, complemented by aquatically-themed décor, an original marble fireplace, and restored arches and vaults.

N/5 – THE BAR, characterized by a vast Carrara marble stone bar, epitomizes a modern interpretation of luxury in St Moritz, blending Swiss heritage with contemporary living. The all-day dining restaurant, THE VIEW, with its circular shape and floor-to-ceiling windows, seamlessly integrates the surrounding landscape, embodying the warmth of St Moritz’s sun.

“Restoring this hotel has been all about the people and guest experience,” enthuses Carole Topin, Interior Designer. “We have kept the existing hotel style, combined with an underpinning of modern luxury while still capturing the essence of the place, which can be seen in the selection of materials, furniture, detailing, and bespoke items that have been designed for the hotel.”

THE STACK, an authentic alpine brasserie, showcases local gastronomy with Art Nouveau elements, red furnishings, and granite-flamed surfaces. The hotel’s 74 rooms and suites, spread across both wings, offer south-facing views of St Moritz Lake and Piz de la Margna, blending contemporary Alpine style with Art Nouveau touches.

In GRACE Wing, the color palette harmonizes with the landscape, framing beds with warm wooden cladding and dark blue headboards inspired by the Alps’ blueish light. GRACE LA MARGNA ST MORITZ pays tribute to Nicolaus Hartmann, seamlessly merging the desires of 21st-century guests with the legacy of the original architect. This iconic landmark promises an extraordinary sensory journey for the new generation of visitors, bridging scale, space, and time in a visually dynamic conversation.
