Tokyo, Shibuya Station, Dig Shibuya, Global Art Event

Visitors will be able to interact with cutting-edge technology and international art around Shibuya Station during the “Dig Shibuya” event, which is scheduled to take place from January 12th to 14th, 2024.

With Google’s massive Japan headquarters situated among some of Tokyo’s most futuristic buildings, Shibuya—long recognized as a thriving hub of pop culture—is also becoming a major player in the tech industry. A three-day event called Shibuya 2024 promises to be a unique fusion of the artistic and high-tech creative energy of the district. It will take place in a variety of Shibuya venues and public spaces. The festival is scheduled to begin on January 12 and will include a variety of talks and performances at Spotify O-East. FriendsWithYou and the Nanzuka gallery’s Shinji Nanzuka will kick things off at 2:15 pm, and there will be panel discussions on subjects like the effect of AI on self-expression and using the city as a canvas.

On each of the three festival days, at midnight, the digital billboards near Shibuya Crossing will be taken over by Dig Shibuya, an exhibition featuring works by over thirty artists, including Yoshirotten and Asako Fujikura. Visitors can watch the Happy Dancing Rainbow Alliance, a performance that aims to spread happiness throughout the world, and watch the FriendsWithYou characters parade down Koen-dori on January 13 from 12 to 3 p.m.

A total of one hundred individuals and groups will exhibit their artwork, including digital art, at seventeen locations close to Shibuya Station as part of the festival, which also features thirteen organizations’ exhibitions at various locations. The installation of the famous piece by the Los Angeles-based creative team FriendsWithYou, a charming sculpture in the shape of a cloud that will be suspended from rows of zelkova trees in Yoyogi Park, will be a prominent feature.

A character parade in costume will start at noon on Saturday along Shibuya Koen Dori Avenue. Parking will be prohibited for the duration of the parade.

During the festival, video art from over thirty different Japanese and international artists and groups will be shown on four massive screens at the scramble crossing in front of Shibuya Station every day from midnight to one in the morning.
