In its efforts to strengthen tourism relations with India, which is considered an important market for Thailand, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) demonstrated its commitment to developing tourism relations with India during the South Asia Travel and Tourism Exchange (SATTE) 2026, which was organized from February 25-27 in New Delhi. TAT introduced its latest initiative, which is titled Healing is the New Luxury, with an emphasis on wellness tourism, cultural tourism, and sustainability. This is part of TAT’s vision of developing high-end tourism with an improved tourism experience.
As India continues to emerge as one of the most promising tourism markets for Thailand, the TAT’s participation at SATTE 2026 underscores its commitment to meeting the evolving needs of Indian travelers. India remains a major source of visitors, with 2.5 million Indian tourists expected to visit Thailand in 2026, contributing to both tourism growth and economic impact.
The tourism partnership between Thailand and India is strengthened by the influx of Millennial and Gen Z travelers who increasingly seek wellness journeys, cultural immersion, and personalized travel experiences. These younger demographics prioritize travel experiences that focus on rejuvenation, restoration, and meaningful encounters, aligning perfectly with Thailand’s evolving tourism strategy focused on high-value and sustainable travel.
Through the Healing is the New Luxury campaign, TAT aims to position Thailand as the ultimate wellness tourism destination. This initiative aligns with the broader trend of sustainable tourism growth, which prioritizes eco-friendly practices, cultural preservation, and local community engagement. The campaign invites Indian travelers to experience the rejuvenating power of Thailand’s natural beauty, from its beaches and mountain landscapes to its wellness resorts and cultural experiences.

The shift towards wellness tourism offers a significant opportunity for Thailand to enhance its position in the global tourism market by promoting holistic travel experiences. As travelers increasingly seek to combine well-being with adventure, Thailand‘s diverse offerings, from spa retreats to meditative experiences, make it a prime destination for those prioritizing personal health and wellness in their travels.
The tourism impact on both Thailand’s economy and the Indian tourism market is undeniable. In 2025, India became Thailand’s fourth-largest inbound market, with 2.48 million Indian tourists generating over 93.86 billion Baht in revenue. This year-over-year increase highlights the growing strength of India’s travel demand for Thailand, particularly among the millennial and Gen Z demographics, who are driving demand for authentic, wellness-focused, and cultural experiences.

To support this growth, TAT is working on expanding tourism infrastructure and ensuring easy accessibility for Indian tourists. The introduction of visa-exemption measures for Indian passport holders, allowing stays of up to 60 days, has made Thailand even more attractive as a tourism destination. Additionally, enhanced air connectivity between India and Thailand is critical for sustaining this tourism growth. In 2025, 10 airlines operated direct services between India and Thailand, offering 3.8 million seats—a sign of the strong demand for travel between the two countries.
The focus on sustainable tourism within the Thailand-India tourism partnership is essential for the long-term viability of both countries’ tourism sectors. As global travelers increasingly prioritize eco-conscious travel, the push towards responsible tourism in Thailand offers a model for the rest of the region. This approach includes environmental protection, cultural preservation, and community engagement in tourism development. By fostering collaboration with local communities and businesses, the tourism industry can create sustainable growth that benefits local economies and reduces the negative impacts of over-tourism.
In regions such as Phuket, Krabi, and Chiang Mai, as well as secondary destinations like Kanchanaburi and Sukhothai, TAT’s sustainability strategy focuses on spreading the benefits of tourism beyond traditional tourist hotspots, thus ensuring that the growing demand for travel does not result in overburdened infrastructure or damage to the natural environment.
As India continues to grow as a major market for Thailand, it is evident that the tourism industry will reap benefits that will be beneficial to both nations for generations to come. By focusing on sustainable tourism, wellness tourism, and cultural exchange, TAT is laying the groundwork for a strong tourism industry that will ensure that both nations continue to be at the forefront of the tourism industry globally. As tourism continues to grow between India and Thailand, it will be instrumental in ensuring economic and cultural sustainability, while laying down foundations for value creation.
