Tourism Boom in Budapest as Running Events Draw Record Numbers of Global Visitors

Budapest has seen a remarkable increase in tourism in 2025, as more than 50,000 foreign tourists travelled to the Hungarian capital to participate in or observe three significant running events: the Telekom Vivicittá, the Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon, and the SPAR Budapest Marathon Festival. As stated by Budapest Sportiroda (BSI), the running events organiser, the influx of foreign participants was a boost to the city’s tourism and positively impacted the local economy by an estimated 10.5 million euros (4 billion HUF) and over 100,000 guest nights.

These numbers indicate the running tourism development trend in Budapest. Nearly 19,000 foreign tourists from 125 different countries participated in the newcomers’ running events. The trend of foreign tourists continues to grow as more than double increase competing in 2023 events. The capital of Budapest is solidifying its position as a sport event and fitness tourism hub.
