The catastrophic 6.8-magnitude earthquake that recently rocked Morocco has not only claimed thousands of lives and caused significant structural damage but has also dealt a devastating blow to the country’s vital tourism sector.

The earthquake’s impact on historical and cultural sites, as well as its ongoing aftershocks, threatens to disrupt Morocco’s tourism recovery and affect the livelihoods of many.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites at Risk

Morocco is home to nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the city of Marrakesh itself. The damage inflicted on these invaluable cultural treasures poses a significant threat to their integrity. Dr. Ismail Shaouf, deputy chairman of Marrakesh’s provincial council, has emphasized the loss of heritage, calling it a “great loss for heritage, world heritage, and Marrakesh in particular.” These sites not only represent architectural beauty but also stand as witnesses to Morocco’s rich history and culture.

Tourism Industry hit hard

Beyond the historical loss, the earthquake’s economic repercussions are a cause for concern. Tourism is a cornerstone of Morocco’s economy, contributing significantly to its GDP. In 2019, it accounted for 7.1% of the total GDP, providing a crucial source of income for low- and middle-income families. The damage to historical sites is expected to have a substantial impact on tourism, potentially affecting the livelihoods of many.

Morocco had been actively working toward a tourism recovery, with substantial investments earmarked to develop the sector. In 2019, Marrakesh stood as the top destination for tourists in Morocco, attracting over three million visitors. However, the earthquake’s aftermath threatens to disrupt these plans and jeopardize the livelihoods of those dependent on the tourism industry.

Intrepid Travel’s Emergency Appeal:

Intrepid Travel, a frequent operator of tours in Morocco, has launched an emergency appeal to raise funds for recovery efforts. In less than 24 hours, the appeal has already garnered nearly $140,000 in donations. The Intrepid Foundation (TIF), which manages the appeal, is matching every donation up to $100,000. Funds raised will support partners like Education for All and High Atlas Foundation, which are actively involved in providing necessary supplies to impacted families, including remote villages severely affected by the earthquake.

G Adventures’ Rerouting and Alternative Experiences:

G Adventures has taken swift action following the earthquake. The company continues to run tours, with the exception of those traveling to the hardest-hit areas, including Mount Toubkal. Tours to Imlil and Ait Ben Haddou have been rerouted to avoid these destinations. Additionally, G Adventures is offering alternative experiences in Marrakech to bypass the affected Medina. The company emphasizes the importance of keeping areas clear to allow emergency services to fulfill their role. G Adventures will assess when it’s appropriate to resume trips, with an understanding of the vital role tourism income plays in supporting local communities.

Bunnik Tours’ Safety Measures:

Dennis Bunnik, the joint-CEO of Bunnik Tours, confirmed that his company has a couple of groups in Morocco that are safe and well. While the situation on the ground is still being assessed, changes will be required to touring itineraries due to damage in the old Medina of Marrakech and the affected areas in the High Atlas Mountains. Bunnik Tours is actively working with its local office to confirm these changes. The company is also reaching out to clients with upcoming departures to Morocco in the next two weeks to provide updates on the developing situation. Tours to Morocco will proceed as planned since the majority of the country’s tourism sights remain unaffected.

TTC Adjusts Itineraries:

Toni Ambler from The Travel Corporation (TTC) confirmed the safety of all its guests traveling across its brands and indicated that itineraries have been adjusted to move guests out of Marrakesh. TTC is committed to making further amendments to itineraries in accordance with the evolving situation on the ground. The company is working closely with its team in Morocco to ensure the well-being of its guests, with a focus on the locals affected by the earthquake.

These efforts by tour operators and wholesalers demonstrate their commitment to supporting recovery and ensuring the safety and well-being of both travelers and the local communities impacted by the earthquake in Morocco.
