Given that it will welcome almost 6 million tourists this year, an increase of 10% from the previous year, Crete is the dominant force in the Greek tourism industry.

Since reservations for the majority of sites have achieved 90% capacity, the tourism industry looks forward to August with hope. Santorini and Mykonos continue to enjoy widespread acclaim.

LysandrosTsilidis, president of the Hellenic Association of Travel & Tourist Agencies, told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) that the summer season and particularly August will not experience a problem in tourist flows to Greece in response to the question of whether the fire in Rhodes could endanger this year’s tourism.

“These days all the destinations will perform well, especially in August,” he said and added, “Time will help to overcome any issues that may have arisen.”

Tsilidis remarked that it will be extremely challenging for travelers who have scheduled a vacation in Greece to modify their trip to somewhere else given the peak tourist season in all competing areas in Greece. To get an update on the situation, the Greek travel agencies will meet with the European Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Associations in an exceptional session the following week.

Regarding reports on how travel firms responded to the situation in Rhodes, he emphasized that while they continue to work hard to satisfy travelers’ demands, they have not abandoned any of their clients.

Focusing on the island destinations that dominate tourist flows, Crete continues to be the dominant force in the Greek tourism industry. And this year, it will reach around 6 million arrivals, 10% more than last year, as ManolisTsakalakis, head of the Hoteliers’ Union of Crete, said to ANA-MPA. MTC GROUP studies show that Mykonos and Santorini are constantly among the most well-liked destinations in the globe.

Lipsi, Samos and Lesvos, Ios, Skopelos, Astypalaia, Andros, Kalymnos, Sifnos, Karpathos, Paros, and Naxos are the islands with over 90% occupancy in August.
