Tourism Malaysia is poised for a significant uptick in tourist arrivals from Indonesia, fueled by the anticipation surrounding the Visit 2024 campaign, which highlights Melaka, Kelantan, Perak, and Perlis as prime destinations.

This initiative not only strengthens the cultural ties and friendship between Malaysia and Indonesia but also sets the groundwork for the monumental Visit Malaysia Year 2026. With a goal to draw 35.6 million international visitors and generate a revenue of RM147.1 billion, the campaign underscores Malaysia’s strategic efforts to bolster its tourism sector and enhance its regional prominence.

The enduring appeal of Malaysia to Indonesian tourists, evidenced by the over 3.1 million visitors last year, is testament to the rich, shared heritage and the wide array of attractions Malaysia offers. Enhanced connectivity through daily flights from Jakarta by Garuda Indonesia further facilitates this travel, promising a swift recovery from the pandemic’s impact and a deeper bilateral relationship.

In an effort to showcase Malaysia’s unparalleled tourism offerings, Tourism Malaysia, in collaboration with the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau and Garuda Indonesia, recently orchestrated a familiarisation trip for Indonesian travel trade partners and media. This endeavor aimed to cement Malaysia’s status as a leading travel destination in Southeast Asia.

Malaysia’s diverse attractions cater to a broad spectrum of interests, from the historical allure of Melaka, with its UNESCO-listed city center that narrates centuries of colonial history, to the pristine beaches and lush rainforests of Perlis. Kelantan offers a deep dive into Malaysia’s cultural essence, presenting traditional crafts, vibrant markets, and unique culinary experiences. Meanwhile, Perak charms visitors with its natural landscapes, including the tranquil Belum Rainforest and the stunning limestone caves around Ipoh.

Kuala Lumpur, the nation’s bustling capital, dazzles with the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, vibrant street markets, and a dynamic food scene that blends Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences. Putrajaya, with its impressive government buildings and beautifully landscaped parks, offers a modern perspective on Malaysia’s architectural ambition.

These concerted efforts by Tourism Malaysia to attract more visitors from Indonesia through strategic campaigns and partnerships, coupled with the country’s rich tapestry of cultural, historical, and natural attractions, are poised to significantly boost tourism numbers, contributing to the sector’s recovery and growth in the coming years.

The familiarization trip for Indonesian travel agents, focusing on the MICE sector, showcased Malaysia’s premier venues like the World Trade Centre and Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre. Participants also enjoyed Putrajaya’s attractions, including Souq Putrajaya and a scenic sunset cruise. The itinerary featured shopping, theme parks, and highlighted Indonesia’s pivotal role in Malaysia’s tourism growth, with a notable increase in 2023 arrivals and robust connectivity through 628 direct flights per week.
