Tourism New Zealand

This activity highlights New Zealand as a destination offering valuable, unforgettable experiences, repeatedly accessible during a single trip.

It features three short films that capture the essence of New Zealand: the soothing hot pools of Rotorua, the brilliant night skies of Tekapo, and the exquisite food and wine of Central Otago. These films are designed to appeal to Japanese tourists by showcasing iconic attractions and key motivational factors. Each film presents genuine locals conveying a friendly and welcoming message, reflecting the hospitable nature of New Zealanders.

Currently, there are about 5.4 million people in Japan considering a trip to New Zealand. Research indicates that Japanese holidaymakers are eager to explore New Zealand’s wildlife, cultural offerings, culinary delights, and adventure activities. Additionally, more than 71% of these visitors travel during the off-peak season, spending an average of $3,910 and staying approximately seven days per visit.

“The pool of people in Japan considering a holiday in New Zealand has been in decline since COVID, and appeal for New Zealand also remains lower than pre pandemic. Cost of living pressures and readiness to travel have contributed to this decline. Tourism New Zealand’s new activity aims to rebuild desire and appeal for destination New Zealand in Japanese consumers,” says Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive Rene de Monchy.

“Tourism is a critical contributor to New Zealand’s economy and is now the second largest export earner. Prior to COVID Japan was our fifth largest market. In 2023 New Zealand welcomed 26,436 holiday visitors from Japan who contributed $95 million to our economy.

“New Zealand can deliver an exceptionally fun and exciting holiday – our research shows this is important to Japanese visitors.
