Tourism players in Kashmir are hoping for a good tourism period from September once more. According to them, in the last one month, the footfall has declined by around 60 to 70 percent.

Mohammad Yaqoob Dunoo, the spokesman of Kashmir Houseboats Association said that this year there is a record breaking tourism spell, since in the last two years, people were not able to venture out.

Dunoo said that with weakening in Covid cases, people started visiting the tourist attractions and Kashmir being known as the‘Paradise on earth’, have witnessed record breaking tourist numbers up till June this year. Tourist numbers usually decrease in July and August; however, due to the restrictions in the wake of the Yatra movement, most people postponed their trips to Kashmir which further led to the decline intourist numbers.

Dunoo said that pilgrims were not permitted to approach toward Srinagar after 4 pm from Pahalgam or Sonamarg and same applied for the general tourists who were in the Valley for holiday. Travel agents from the rest of India stopped their bookings till Raksha Bandhan, since these constraints would not be in place after 11th August this year.

At the moment, 90 percent houseboat and 80% hotels in Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg are empty; however, after Rakhsa Bandhan, there would be commencement of marriage season in different Indian states and from September, it is expected that footfall will rise again as couples would visit these places for honeymoon.
